    Boyd Speedway Results
    4-12-2014
(Chattanooga, Ringgold, Ga) A good crowd had found its way to the famed 1/3 mile clay oval of Boyd Speedway for another exciting evening of dirt track racing. The evenings Heat race winners were in FWD David Singleton and Koty Campbell. B-Hobby winners were Richard Dixon and Dallas Brooks also in A-Hobby Booger Brooks captured the pole alongside Cleveland’s Justin Winters. The last two division winners were in Crate Late Model Sale Creek’s Kenny Kizzar and Scotty Hogan and in Steel Headed Late Model a pair of Ringgold residence in Mike Tinker and Jamie Perry had worked their way to the front and captured their respected Heat Victories.

Before we brought the first of the nights Feature Events onto the racetrack the first of two lucky fans were given the ride of the life as Track Owner Dale McDowell warmed up the two-seater and took Brenda Gurley around the 1/3 mile clay oval. After the ride she stated that she had witnesses several weeks ago a fan getting the same opportunity and told her son on that night “I want to do that”. Well long after the ride was over she was caught on the phone calling anyone she could to share what an exciting time she had.

The night’s first feature brought the FWD/PONY class to the front stretch for the 15 lapper. With David Singleton and last week’s winner Koty Campbell leading the field to the green it didn’t take Campbell long to seize control of the top spot which he never let go. Campbell made it two in a row following up last week’s win. Campbell was followed by Singleton, Corey Bettis, Nathan Hair and Dillon Davenport.

The B-Hobby “Heavy Weights” were set to start with Cleveland’s Richard Dixon leading the field to the green. It didn’t take long until Dallas Brooks made a quick pass for the lead and had the field chasing the #45 for the remainder of the event. Dallas would see the field slowed for a couple of cautions, but that didn’t give the field any extra advantage because once the green flag flew he took quick command. Brooks would take yet another Boyd Speedway Victory followed by Jason Emahisher, Jason Tate, Jim Gilbert and Ronnie Kerr.

With 20 A-Hobbies ready to battle for the top prize a couple of A-Hobby veterans were set to battle from the front row. With Booger Brooks on the inside and Justin Winters on his outside the green flag flew. In what turned out to be a race filled with cautions Brooks took the early lead until the first yellow flag flew on lap 2. Defending Division Champion Beau Bice was now on Brooks’s rear bumper, but even with the double file restarts now being used each week in all divisions it wasn't enough to take the top spot from Brooks on the restart. With 4 more cautions taking up valuable time the race was shorten to a 15 lap green white checkered finish. Brooks would take the win followed by Bice, Josh Beagan (hard charger award from 14th to 3rd), Justin Winters and John Clark rounded out the top 5.

It was now time to take a break in the action for the second “fan’s ride of a lifetime” with Dale McDowell. Ringgold’s Gary Bennett was buckled in and ready to go as Dale pulled the Boyd Speedway, Sam’s Club two-seater out onto the raceway. Bennett shared his experience afterward saying’ “I drove race cars back in the 70’s when Dale’s Dad raced and Dale was just getting started. But he also stated that it was a lot different now than then and that other seat gets you up a lot closer to that wall than he remembered.

In what may have been the best event of the evening the Crate Late Models gave the fans something to talk about. With Sale Creek’s Kenny Kizzar leading the field around the 1/3 mile clay oval behind the Mtn View Chevy Official Pace Truck with Dale McDowell in the bed of the truck with a dozen or so of the youngest racing fans he could find in the stands to ride along with. The kids were having a blast even though it was only the pace laps. Once the green flew Kizzar took an early command of the top spot. In second was Lexington NC’s Ryan Gifford racing out of the TeamDillonRacing Operation. The battle between Gifford and Kizzar was some of the best racing that has taken place all year. As Gifford worked to pass Kizzar from the high side on one lap to the lower side the next he was now being chased by the veteran Jeff Smith. A lap 10 pass of Gifford by Smith set up a shootout between Kizzar and Smith. The three stayed close as they began to work lapped traffic. Smith seemed to have the pass made from the bottom on several occasions but Kizzar would battle back to keep the lead. As the race would continue caution free it was going to come down to the last lap. Kizzar would hold on to take a long awaited victory, but Gifford edged Smith at the line by a couple of inches. Following Kizzar, Gifford, and Smith to the line was last week’s winner Rick Hixson and Craig Burrows.

The last of the night’s feature brought the Steel Headed Late Models to the track as a pair of Ringgold Veterans in Mike Tinker and Jamie Perry led the field to the green. The fans were still on the feet with the excitement created by the Crate Late Models when the green flag flew. Perry took the early lead with Tinker close by. A quick caution in turn 1 with a five car pileup slowed the field to a stop. As track officials worked to clear the turn of cars and debris. Once back underway Perry took command and never looked back as he took his second victory in a row followed by John Owenby, Brannon Armatige, Mike Tinker and Todd Hernandez.

Another great night of racing and even in the end Dale McDowell took several more excited fans on rides around the 1/3 mile clay oval.
