Default Small block chevy oil level height.

Does anyone know how far down the oil level should be below the pan rail? I need to weld a bung on my oil pan to check the oil level. I don't have enough room for a dipstick.it is a first generation engine.

Our Champ pans have a fill plug on the top of the kick out… the level needs to be just below the top of the plug. Yours may be different...

Would you mind measuring it for me? How many inches down from the oil pan rail is the oil level?

What pan are you using? 7" deep? 7.25" 7.5" or stock?

I think you'll be OK if the oil level is just at, or slightly below, the bottom of the front part of the pan. Just keep it below the crankshaft.

Can't you just put 7-8 quarts (whatever you are running) of water in the pan an measure it?
