Boyd Speedway Official Results 6-14-2014

(Chattanooga, Ringgold, Georgia) After taking a week off it was back to racing on the 1/3 mile clay oval with the Mid-Season Steel Head Championship on the line. A good crowd was on hand and ready to see the dirt fly. First we needed to run a few qualifying heats races to determine the starting positions for the evenings Feature Events. First out would bring the “Heavy Weights” B-Hobby with Graysville’s Eric Hughes capturing the pole for the feature with Dallas Brooks taking the outside pole position. In Crate Late Model Ringgold’s David Tindell and Sale Creek’s Kenny Kizzar taking front row starting positions. A-Hobby saw Jimmy Brown and Booger Brooks win their respected Heats to start up front. With the Steel Head running for the Mid-Season Championship 40 lap $1500 to the winner; the class was lined up for qualifying. The Top 6 qualifiers would lock in and draw for their respected starting position 1-6. Ringgold’s Jamie Perry would set fast time with a 13.907 followed by Ethan Hunter with a 13.989. Rounding out the top six were Justin Litchford (13.992), Roger (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son (14.083), Heath Hindman (14.104) and Rick Hixson (14.170). The top six were brought to the front stretch for the starting position draw. By the luck of the draw the starting six position had been set with Rick Hixson on the pole alongside Heath Hindman, second row was Justin Litchford and Jamie Perry and third row was Roger (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son and Ethan Hunter. The remaining field would be determined by a 10 lap B-Main.

It was now Feature Time as we brought the PONY/ Division out for a 20 lap Feature Event. With Shelby Gibby and Kenny Carlile bringing the field to the green it didn’t take EJ Bailey long to take the top spot. Koty Campbell would take over the top spot on lap three and looked to be on his way to another Boyd Speedway Victory. As the laps clicked off a few of the competitors would start to experience mechanical issues an pull to the pits. A late caution would find our leader in the same boat as his machine was overheating and had pull to the infield placing Grady Stokes in the top spot. With six cars having engine issues on lap 19 the race was flagged with a green/white checkered finish giving Grady Stokes his first Boyd Speedway victory in some time. Rounding out the top 5 was Bruce Kimber, Natasha Stokes, Kenny Carlile and Koty Campbell.

The “Heavy Weights” B-Hobby was up next with Eric Hughes and Dallas Brooks starting on row one. Hughes would take the early lead followed by Jimmy Smith going for yet another victory. Smith and Hughes would put on a fierce battle as they battled lap traffic. A lap 10 caution would see Dallas Brooks slow in turn 4 with engine problems and he would retire to the pits. A 5 lap shootout would see Smith and Hughes finish 1-2 followed by Adam Earwood, Jeff Irvin and Jim Gilbert.

Next out to the racing surface would bring the A-Hobby Division for their 20 lapper. A frequent front row starter would see Booger Brooks starting from the outside pole position alongside of pole sitter Jimmy Brown. Brooks going for his fifth straight victory would take the lead from the start. Brown would make it competitive hanging with Brooks for the entire race. But in the end the checkered flag would go to Booger Brooks followed by Brown, David Doss (coming from dead last), Brandon Stanfield and John Clark.

The ever competitive Crate Late Models were called to the starting grid. With Ringgold’s David Tindell starting from the pole and leading the field to the green. The 20 car field would see the race go caution free for the entire 25 laps. Tindell would take the early lead followed by Kizzar, but a quick pass on lap 2 saw Jeff Smith take over the runner-up position after making repairs from a crash in the earlier heat race. A lap 5 pass of Tindell would place Smith in the driver’s seat and leading the field through heavy traffic. As the battle between Smith, Tindell and now Craig Burrows continued the eyes of the fans were locked on a driver that was heavily damaged in a lap one crash in the first heat leaving him to start dead last on the nights feature as Soddy Daisy’s Jerry Coffman was making his move. Smith and Burrows were showing the way as both continued to lap the slower markers lap after lap. Coffman by lap 16 was now inside the top 5 and his eyes set on 4th place runner Kenny Kizzar. Coffman needed that caution that never came and found him in the third spot as the laps closed. Smith took another victory followed by Burrows, Coffman, Tindell and Kenny Kizzar.

It was now time for the evenings main event a 40 lap $1500 to win Steel Head Mid-Season Championship up for grasp. With the luck of the draw Rick Hixson would lead the field around for the four-wide parade lap. With Hixson and Hindman leading them to the green a quick start by Hixson placed him up front. Frequent Boyd Speedway Feature winner Jamie Perry would quickly find himself chasing Hixson from second place. As the laps clicked away everything Perry tried Hixson on this night had the answer. When Perry tried the low side Hixson used the top side momentum to remain up front. Perry just couldn’t get the traction off the bottom he needed to clear Hixson lap after lap. Eyes were glued to the leaders until a late battle was now on for the runner-up position as fellow Ringgold racer Mike Tinker was now pressuring Perry. As Hixson continued to show the way, Tinker and Perry were putting on a side by side battle for the second spot. A lap 36 caution would see the ride of Heath Hindman go up in smoke. This tightens up the field for a four lap shootout. With Hixson starting up front the two behind him were now lined up side by side for the double file restart. This is where the story took a different turn, with two laps remaining the battle between Perry and Tinker not only continued but now it was personal. The two banged against each other over the last two laps getting the fans to rise to their feet. In the finish Hixson took the Mid-Season Championship followed by Perry, Todd Hernandez, Tinker and Roger (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son. But as Perry and Tinker drove around the track on the cool down lap the contact continued. A late pit confrontation was heard to have taken place as the two shared the opinions of each other’s driving techniques. The two are regular racers at Boyd Speedway so we can’t wait to see if they have agreed to disagree in regards to the late race issues. Stay Tuned!!! Congratulation to our Mid-Season Champion Rick Hixson.
