TAZEWELL, TN (September 1, 2014)—After being rained out on Labor Day Weekend, Tazewell Speedway will return to action on Saturday Night September 6th with the running of the Sixth Annual Buddy Rogers Memorial event presented by West Chevrolet.

The Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series will sanction this event for the first time. The event will pay $4,400-to-win and $400-to-start. The Sportsman ($700-to-win), Pure Streets, Classics and Four Cylinders will all be on tap for the night’s activities.

Ronnie Johnson has claimed the last two series events of the four previous contested. Johnson picked up the win on May 17 at Penton (Ala.) Raceway and Tazewell (Tenn.) Speedway on June 14. Other series winners include Dingus Griffin on March 22 at Talladega (Ala.) Short Track and Jake Knowles on April 12 at East Alabama Motor Speedway.

The Buddy Rogers Memorial first appeared on the Tazewell Speedway schedule in 2009 when Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn. claimed the win during the O’Reilly Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series-sanctioned event. Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn. claimed the 2010 version of the event which was sanctioned by the National All Stars Racing Association (NASRA). Vic Hill of Mosheim, Tenn. picked up the 2011 NASRA-sanctioned victory while the 2012 version of the event would fall victim to weather. Billy Ogle Jr. would claim the $4,400 victory in 2013 during the Southern All Stars Series race. The race is run in honor of long-time veteran racer Buddy Rogers who passed away in 2008 due to cancer.

Each memorial race, Jimmy ‘Pup’ Thomas, long-time family friend of the Rogers Family collects donations to the American Cancer Society. The tradition still goes on as ‘Pup’ collects $44.00 per lap from teams, fans, sponsors and officials but the outpouring of the fans has been tremendous each season. Although $1,936 in feature lap money is collected and sent directly to the American Cancer Society in Buddy’s name, donations still come in throughout the night from the generous fan support and the folks giving understand that cancer has either touched their lives or a family members or someone they know has been affected by the awful disease.

Race fans can still donate to the American Cancer Society by sponsoring a lap for just $44.00. You can contact Jimmy ‘Pup’ Thomas at (865) 806-4459 or Chris Tilley at (606) 219-1723. Several laps are still available. The entire list of lap sponsors are listed at the bottom.

Some of the drivers that are scheduled to be at Tazewell Speedway on September 6th include: Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, Ga., Jake Knowles of Tyrone, Ga., Lavon Sparks of Phenix City, Ala., Mark Dowdy of Waterlooa, Ala., Chase Edge of LaFayette, Ala., Tyler Crowder of Lamont, Fla., Jadon Frame of Winchester, Tenn., Brad Hall of Knoxville, Tenn., Matthew Summers of Winchester, Tenn., Brandon Williams of Crossville, Tenn., David Brannon of Elora, Tenn., Mack McCarter of Galtinburg, Tenn. along with a host of others.
