In a night of firsts at the FUEL Racing Series finale at Friendship Motor Speedway, Ryan Atkins broke through in dominating fashion for his first win of the season while Ross Bailes secured the inaugural FUEL Racing Series championship via his 5th place finish.For Atkins, the night was one of dominance as the Mount Airy, NC native qualified 4th, won his heat race, and led all 40 laps of the feature event. "It's been a very tough year from wrecks to misfortunes, it feels really good" said Atkins. While Atkins celebrated the win, Ross Bailes celebrated a championship. Bailes who hailes from Clover, SC earned the first ever FUEL Racing Series Championship by winning 4 races, and never finishing outside the top 5 in any of the 10 FUEL races in 2014. "I can't complain about this year, we've had an outstanding season and I've just got to thank everyone for getting this deal together because it was fun" said Bailes. The night would start in Klotz Synthetic Lubricants Time Trials as 13 FUEL Late Models would make the call at Friendship Motor Speedway. The battle in qualifying would be between Billy Hicks and Bailes as the two shared the track during qualifying and would trade the pole position before Bailes would out-qualify Hicks by .003 seconds. Heat Race #1 would feature an intense 3 car battle for the win between Ricky Weeks, Brett Hamm and Mitchell Coble while polesitter Bailes would drop back to 5th of the initial start. Weeks would hold on for a hard fought heat win after holding off the hard charging Hamm. In heat race #2, Atkins would withstand an early challenge from Hicks, Atkins would pull away for the win while Hicks held off a determined Donald Bradsher to the finish. After the heat races the top 4 redraw would see Atkins draw the pole while Billy Hicks would draw the outside pole, Ricky Weeks and Brett Hamm would draw a 3 and 4 respectively.As the 40 lap feature got underway, Atkins would pull away early on in the event. Hicks would hold 2nd place for most of the race before mechanical issues would sideline his bid for a win. Bill Tesh would also have mechanical gremlins strike as his night would end early as well along with Mitchell Coble. Atkins would withstand two restart challenges but would not be denied as his #9 would pull away for his first win of the season leading all 40 laps.
