    Benningfield, Coffman, Thomas, and Hounshell, Jr. are 2014 Ponderosa Speedway Track Champions

    Junction City, KY-November 2, 2014- With the 2014 on-track activities now finished for the year, Ponderosa Speedway would like to recognize its 2014 track champion and top ten point earners at the 3/8 mile D-shaped red clay oval better known as “Kentucky’s Baddest Bullring”.

    Dion Benningfield of Lebanon, KY is the 2014 Super Late Model track champion. It is his first-ever track championship and he scored the honor in the seat of the Bob and Robbie Bennett owned Rocket Chassis sponsored by Bennett’s Car Care and Performance and Yeager Insulation. Benningfield started in eleven feature events this season, with his best finish being a fifth place on three different occasions (April 5, May 30, and June 13). Second place in Super Late Model track points is Timmy Taylor of Harrodsburg, KY, with also starting eleven feature events, with his season best finish being a sixth place on April 5. Justin Rattliff of Campbellsville, KY finished third in points, despite having his season shortened due to a hand injury. Rattliff would start eight feature events and score one win at the track on May 30. Former track champion Victor Lee of Danville, KY claimed the fourth position in track points, picking up three event wins along the way in the eight feature events he started, with wins on May 2, May 3 (17th Annual Pete Abell Memorial), and May 30. Another former track champion, Dustin Linville of Lancaster, KY, would complete the top five in final Super Late Model track points, having raced in seven events and picking up three event wins April 5, August 1 (14th Annual Hugh “Junebug” Rowland Memorial), and September 27 (3rd Annual Red Clay Bash). Completing the top ten in 2014 Super Late Model track points are Tim Tungate of Campbellsville, KY (six feature starts, two second place finishes), Jake Henry of Junction City, KY (eight feature starts, best finish fourth place), Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY (six feature starts, two second place finishes), rookie Tripp Gerrald of Nicholasville, KY (five feature starts, best finish third place), and Tommy Bailey of Corbin, KY (seven feature starts, two fifth place finishes). The Super Late Model division would produce eight different winners during the season, with other feature event winners including Dustin Neat of Dunnville, KY, Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN (2nd Annual Spring Showdown and 11th Annual John Bradshaw Memorial worth $10,001), Timmy Yeager of Harrodsburg, KY, Michael Chilton of Salvisa, KY, and Jason Barrett of Waco, KY.

    Todd Coffman of Junction City, KY is the 2014 Pro Late Model track champion. It is Coffman’s third track title in the division, having previously won the track title for the class in 2008 and 2013. Coffman would take this title in the Sharon Coffman owned Rocket Chassis sponsored by Coffman’s Photography, The Muffler Shop, Hurst Racing, Harrod Farms, Premier Self Storage, Auto Connection, Archie’s Tire, Todd’s Body Shop, and Wilson Equipment. Coffman would score seven feature event wins in twelve starts (May 2, May 3, May 23, May 30, June 13, July 25, and Sept. 27) on the way to his third track championship in the class. Elliott Despain of Campbellsville, KY, a rookie in the Pro Late Model division, would finish second in track points for the class and score two event wins on April 18 and June 27 in twelve starts. Gary Yeager of Harrodsburg, KY would take third place in points, despite a hand injury early in the season, making nine starts, with a best finish of second on April 5 and April 12. Wesley Brummett of Harrodsburg, KY would make eight starts and finish fourth in points, with his best finish being second on April 18. Zane Powell of Junction City, KY would complete the top five in class points, making seven feature starts and scoring a best finish of second twice (May 30 and August 22). Rounding out the top ten in 2014 Pro Late Model track points are Chris Fair of Liberty, KY (seven feature starts, best finish sixth twice), Glen Hounshell, Jr. of Mount Vernon, KY (six feature starts, best finish fourth twice), David Hill of Nicholasville, KY (six feature starts, best finish fourth place), Jeremy Strunk of Bronston, KY (five feature starts, best finish third place), and former track champion P.J. Feistritzer of Danville, KY (four feature starts, two event victories). Tyler Allen of Indianapolis, IN also scored a win in the division in 2014, as only four different racers visited victory lane in Pro Late Model action.

    Ryan Thomas of Gosport, IN is the 2014 Modified track champion. The builder of Diamond Race Cars, it is the first track championship at Ponderosa for Thomas, who drove the Kerry Trowbridge owned Diamond Race Car sponsored by Automotive Specialists, Johnson Heating and Air, Tri County Auto and Oil, Pro Crafters, Brunner and Son Lawn Maintenance, Dexter’s Gun and Ammo, and KY Clutch. Thomas would start thirteen main events and pick up seven event wins (April 12, May 30, June 13, June 27, July 25, August 22, and Sept. 27) on the way to the track title. Teammate Michael England of Glasgow, KY would finish second in points, starting nine events and scoring three wins along the way (April 18, May 23, and August 1). Rocky Wilson of Elizabethtown, KY claimed third in the final points by making eleven feature starts, with his best finish being a fifth place on five occasions (April 5, April 12, May 23, and June 13). Former track champion Elliott Despain of Campbellsville, KY would take fourth in points, making ten starts and winning one event on April 5. Another former track champion, J.T. Ayers of New Haven, KY, would round out the top five in points for the division, having made seven starts, with a best finish of second on April 12. The remainder of the ten in Modified track points are rookie Steven Eversole of Crab Orchard, KY (ten starts, best finish sixth place), former track champion Benji Lee of Loretto, KY (seven starts, best finish second place), Jeff Watson of Campbellsville, KY (seven starts, best finish second place), former track champion Stacey Decker of Eubank, KY (eight starts, best finish sixth place twice), and youngster Blake Brown of Corbin, KY (seven starts, best finish third place). Bryan Barber of Greensburg, KY also won two features in the division in 2014, as only four different drivers visited victory lane in Modified action.

    Glen Hounshell, Jr. of Mount Vernon, KY is the 2014 Sportsman track champion. Hounshell, Jr. would nab six feature wins (April 12, May 3, May 23, May 30, June 27, and Sept. 27) in thirteen starts en route to his first track title at Ponderosa driving his Central Kentucky Sheet Metal, Smoke House Grill and Buffet, Nationwide Insurance, Central Scrap, B&B Homes, Jenning’s Do It Best Center, R&R Builders, AR Bodies, HVH Heads, and Boyd Built Brakes sponsored entry. Glen Branham of Berea, KY would take second in track points, starting thirteen features and finishing second on five occasions (April 12, May 2, May 3, May 23, May 30). Sarah Patrick of Albany, KY would be third in points, starting eleven features, with a best finish of third on May 2 and May 30. Terry Cheeks of Paint Lick, KY would claim fourth place, starting ten feature events, with a best finish of fourth on May 30. Jeremy Howard of Berea, KY would complete the top five in points, starting seven feature events, scoring two event wins on April 5 and July 25. The second five is Sportsman final track points are Darrell Cain of Richmond, KY (eight starts, best finish third place), Eddie Stewart of Manchester, KY (five starts, two second place finishes), former track champion Derek Bottoms of Taylorsville, KY (six starts, one event win), Johnny King of Lancaster, KY (six starts, two sixth place finishes), and Nathaniel Mullins of Berea, KY (four starts, best finish third). Allen Hackworth of Waco, KY would also win two feature events, while Jim Robinson of Richmond, KY and Russ Gabbert of Berea, KY would also win a feature each in the division that saw six different drivers in victory lane in 2014.

    The track will host a banquet at a later date to be announced to honor its top racers of the 2014 season and to also discuss the upcoming 2015 season. The 2015 season schedule will be released in the near future and will be the biggest season in the history of the storied track.
