    Default small base circle cams

Is there any performance advantage in using a small base circle cam?

Just the opposite.Thats the reason for going to 50-55mm cores.Camshafts go through a lot of what is called "torsional twist" What happens is the camshaft actually twists from front to rear causing valve timing to vary greatly from the front of the engine to the rear of the engine, killing hp.The only reason to ever use a small base circle camshaft is because the rods hit the cam on a long stroke.

Smaller base circle is also harder on the lifters, and increases the effort required to turn the cam due to the added side loading of the lifters.
