WINTERS POSTS SEASON FIRST LATE MODEL TRIUMPH ON ARCH NIGHT May 17th, 2015 Palmer Continues On A Roll with Season Third Late Model Sportsman Victory, Craig Ramich scores Career First in First Appearance of Mid-Atlantic Modifieds HAGERSTOWN, MD. – Marvin Winters’ season so far at Hagerstown Speedway/Dirt Capitol has been mostly plagued by a number of issues, but Saturday night, there were none and he was able to get the monkey off his back to post his first Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic Late Model win of the season, his career 28th and first since last July. The win came on Student Night/Armed Forces/ Law Enforcement/ Fire/Rescue /ARCH Appreciation night and as an ARCH member, received an additional $25. By virtue of the invert and starting on the outside pole, Winters, of McConnellsburg, led all the way to capture the win by 1.05 second over Keith Jackson who came all the way from 17th. “Any win here at Hagerstown is special,” Winters said. ”There are a lot of tough customers. You have to have luck on your side. We drew a good pill for the heat and then fell back in the heat, but got a caution and got back to second for the invert. Everything just worked out tonight. The track was excellent tonight. The guys did a great job getting it run in after the rain. You can’t ask for any more than that.” Current point leader Scott Palmer from Greencastle posted his third win, also as an ARCH member, in the Malloy Ford Late Model Sportsman Spring Championship after leading the final five circuits. Keith Koontz, Boonsboro, MD took the honors by one length in the K-Lynn Management Pure Stocks for his first win since May 25, 2012 while Gary Proctor of Big Pool, MD, recorded his season third in a side by side battle with Kenny Thomas in the Mason Dixon Auto Auction Hobby Stocks Spring Championship and also as an ARCH Member. In the first appearance of the Mid Atlantic Modifieds, Craig “Big Daddy” Ramich of Fairfax, VA posted his career first win. Winters took off from the outside pole in the four car invert with Tyler Hershey settling into the runner up spot as they pulled away from Matt Cosner. Hershey coasted to a stop on the seventh lap as Andy Anderson grabbed second on the ninth lap but Winters was out front just over 2 ½ seconds and Gary Stuhler into third when Tyler Horst also came to a stop. Keith Jackson, who had methodically worked his way to the front from 17th, passed both Stuhler and then Anderson for second but Winters held the edge during the final six laps to capture the win. Stuhler, Anderson, and Jerry Bard completed the top five. The Late Model Sportsman went green with Bobby Beard beating polesitter Chaz Walls on the start while Palmer headed to the front from seventh. He passed Walls on the seventh lap and closed to Beards bumper in three laps. They raced side by side for another three before Palmer was able to get past on the 16th just before the red flag was displayed when fourth and fifth runners Rodney Walls and Chad Myers got together coming off the fourth turn sending Myers into one of the worst crashes seen for a long time at the track. He flew through the air and ended upside down just before the flag stand but crawled from the car and was walking around. Palmer went on to lead the final four laps and beat R.Walls to the finish by nearly two seconds with Beard, Justin Weaver and Kyle Lee next. Lee started 17th in a backup car following problems in the heat with the primary ride. “When I caught up to Bobby Beard, I had to really be patient because he was really good at keeping me crowded down and running a good line,” Palmer said. “The lapped traffic actually helped me and left me squeeze by. My only concern after that red was if the tires would fire back up but they seemed okay.” Koontz started from the pole with a three car invert in the Pure Stocks and had Jamie Zentmyer charge past to lead the fourth lap. Zentmyer appeared headed for the win and had a half straightaway lead until rolling to a stop on the tenth lap with a possible engine issue. At the same time, Mike Corbin dumped liquid down and also went pitside with Koontz leading the restart and holding off his uncle Brian Miller by a length with Sean Dawson, Chris Ebersole and (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)ie Tharp next. Gary Proctor took the Hobby Stock lead while Kenny Thomas pulled into second and by the halfway mark they began a side by side battle the final half of the race with Thomas leading slightly each lap, Proctor then was able to hold a slight advantage the final four circuits and they were still side by side to the line with Proctor holding no more than a foot advantage to also win as an ARCH member. Tom Caravello had the best seat in the house to watch while Jamie Mills and Jason Sarver were next. “What a race, that’s all I can say,” Proctor said. Starting seventh, Vic Vandergrift took the Mid Atlantic Modified lead on the fourth and raced away to a lengthy lead while Alyssa Rowe grabbed the runner up spot on the eighth lap. Rowe made contact with Vandergrift on a 13th lap restart with both restarting on the rear as Ramich used the high side of final turn to pass Derek Deuesenberry for the win. Justin Milburn, Josh Cramer and Vandergrift were next. “When you’re out there on the track and you get separated like that, you’re hoping for a caution to put us back together and give you a chance and it’s unfortunate the 55 and 1 got together,” Ramich said. “The high side was there so we put it up there to see if it stuck. We just drove off. We’re excited. This is career win #1.” Follow the speedway on Twitter and Facebook at Dirt Capitol LLC and also check out Ernie D’s Turn 5 on Facebook with information about events, driver’s interviews, race status and more.
