Default Boyd's Speedway 5-30-2015.........the real story!

    Boyd’s Speedway Results 5/30/2015

(Chattanooga,Tn, Ringgold, Ga) What a wonderful night was had at the 1/3 mile clay oval this past Saturday night. The night’s Feature Event would be a Twin 20 lapper for the Crate Late Models with $1000 going to each event winner. We had 30 Crate Late Models signed in a ready to compete, but first we needed to get through Hot Laps and Qualifying Heats. Once we had completed those events it was time for the nights first Feature. The B-Hobby “Heavy Weights” were summoned to the front stretch for their 15 lap Main Event. Multiple Feature Event winners Ricky Wagner would take the poll alongside of Michael Brooks. Wagner would take the lead on the first lap with Brooks in tow, but a lap 5 caution for Brooks in turn 3 would end his challenge for the evening. This placed #38 Jeff Irvin in the runner-up spot for the restart, but as the laps counted down Wagner would lead from flag to flag and was followed across the finish by Irvin, Jason Emahisher, Charles Williams and Larry Whaley.

It was now time for the first of the Crate Late Model Twins to roll off the starting grid. Track Officials made a decision not to send anyone home so all 30 cars where lined up ready to compete. Jeff Smith was awarded the pole position by his top qualifying time of 14.17 second would be John Owenby with a 14.28 lap. The challenge would be to stay out front and be able to move through the expected early lap traffic with a 30 car field. Owenby piloting his Longhorn Chassis #44 would take the early lead with Smith right on his back bumper. The top 4 cars of Owenby, Smith, Riley Hickman and Forrest Trent would wage a fierce battle for their respected spot. But in the end as they demonstrated their driving skills working the lap traffic Owenby would take the First Twin $1000. Owenby would pull to the front stretch to pull a pill to determine the starting spot of the front row and with his luck he pulled a 3 pill which meant he would start in the 5th starting position for the night’s second Twin.

The Crates were all sent back to their pits to make the needed changes to better themselves in the next event or at least maintain what they had. But first the A-Hobbies were brought to the 1/3 mile clay oval for their 15 lap event. With #5 Josh Beagan and the youngster Logan Walston bringing the field to the green Beagan would take the early lead, but a hard charging Walston wanted that first ever Boyd’s Speedway Victory and made his move on lap 6 passing Beagan for the lead. Walston would stretch that lead a car length or two each lap going on to take his First Ever Boyd’s Speedway Win followed by Beagan, #C6 Ronnie Kerr, Jacob Stewart and Ralph McWhorter.

With 19 Limited Late Models ready to compete in the 30 lapper it brought the K37 of Drew Kennedy to the front row with a qualifying time of 14.09. Starting alongside of Kennedy would be Soddy Daisy’s Jerry Coffman with a repeated 14.09 lap. Coffman back was back in the familiar A-1 Towing Machine sponsored car. Coffman had taken a week off last week and allowed fellow Soddy Daisy driver Robby Mason to pilot the car to victory lane, now it was Coffman’s time to see if he could repeat. Kennedy would take the lead from his pole position, but not to the pleasure of Coffman as heavy contact was made exiting turn 4 on the start as Kennedy drove into the side of Coffman’s driver side door booting Coffman all the way back to 6th. A lap 2 caution slowed the field and while under caution Coffman let Kennedy know of his displeasure of the starting move. Kennedy continued to lead but a battle was brewing behind him between, Tod Hernandez, Mike Tinker, and last week’s winner Robby Mason and Andy Miller all making their way toward the front. Oh by the way, did I tell you Coffman restarted in 6th and I think the anger of the start sent him on a mission to regain his competitive position. Coffman began passing cars where he could and some more than once because of the large number of cautions the event was plagued with. Kennedy still had the top spot but now Coffman was there, trying the low side only to get the door slammed shut several times. Coffman took to the outside now with the fans on their feet Hernandez stated “Wait a Minute” I want some of the action. As Kennedy led, Coffman trying the outside Hernandez squeezed under him on the low side. A late lap caution would line the field up nose to tail for the restart, Coffman now in 3rd, was committed to the outside and on the last lap finally made that winning pass of Kennedy and Hernandez and took the victory much to the crowd’s enjoyment. Coffman was followed across the finishing line by Kennedy (but was DQ’D for light at the scales), moving Hernandez up a spot, Andy Miller took third and Robby Mason taking home 4th and Johnny Cloer Jr, coming to 5th from his 15th starting position.

The second Crate Late Model Twin was lined up now with 28 cars starting the race. By virtue of the pill pull this placed the #8A of Todd Morrow and #85H of Larry Higgins on the front row. Morrow would bring the field to the green and take the early lead with Riley Hickman close behind. A lap 8 pass would see Hickman overtake Morrow for the top spot. On lap 11fans would see a new second place competitor as Forrest Trend would pass Morrow for the runner-up spot. Jeff Smith would see his night come to an early end in the second feature with mechanical issues. Riley would pilot his CVR racing machine to the night 2nd Twin Crate victory over Trend, Morrow, Andy Picklesimer and Larry Huggins. Both first and second place cars of both feature now had to pass a post-race engine inspection. All cars were cleared as the racing machines had pass inspection.

The nights final Feature brought the Pony Division to the track and saw Michael Courtney take his year’s first victory over Grady Stokes, Koty Campbell, Danny Burnette and Billy Bailey.

During the nights events it was announced that Boyd’s Speedway was going to move its racing back to Friday nights with its original purses being paid, with Special Events to be still held on some Saturday nights. The racers have ask and the fans have ask that we move our racing program back to Friday, we just ask that with the change you will show that appreciation by coming out to support this move. We will be closed the next two Friday’s due to the Chattanooga RiverBend Festival, but our next scheduled event will be June 19th featuring the Vintage Racing Machine for all you old timers plus a full racing program.
