    Default axles

02 Mastersbilt. Car came with heavy 36/31 axles. I have light, drilled 35/33 that will fit in the rear end with no trouble. These are easily 5 lbs lighter, each. The drive plates bolt up no trouble, and the axles seem to engage without any trouble. Is this okay, or do I need to stick with what came in it? Thanks

Also, how can I tell if this is a smackdown or wide/combo car? Can I measure distance between frame rails in front? Just want to make sure I set it up appropriately...

It also appears as though this car, regardless of type, should have 33/35 axles anyways. So, I should be fine, yes?

As long as you get full engagement of splines in the spools, you can use about any length that will allow that. We have stripped a spool before and swapped axles side to side to get splines and ran the rest of the season that way, lol.

If the upper 4 link brackets are not flush with the frame rail, but spaced out, it is either a smack or narrow car.

Great. Thanks for the input. This is definitely a wide/combo car. It hasn't been raced since 2005, and has been in temperature controlled garage since. Every part is new. The question I have now is, do I set it up just exactly by the sheet? It calls for 500RF, 500LF, 250LR, 200RR springs, which I know is not the norm now. I will be on oil double adjustables.

I would strongly encourage you to move the RR rail in if it hasn't been done. Then I would go 500lf, 450 rf, 200 lr, 225 RR.
