Default Iron-Man Mtn. Championship Heads South to Volunteer and Tazewell July 1 and 2

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Iron-Man Mtn. Championship Heads South to Volunteer and Tazewell July 1 and 2

By Chris Tilley and Michael Despain

SOMERSET, KY (June 26, 2016)—The Iron-Man Mountain Championship will continue a busy stretch of races as Rounds Four and Five on Friday July 1st at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn. and Saturday July 2nd at Tazewell Speedway in Tazewell, Tenn.

On Friday Night July 1st the tour will make it’s only appearance this season to the Volunteer Speedway for a 30-lap $3,052-to-win and $350-to-start event. The Fourth Annual Scott Sexton Memorial pays tribute to one of the finest racers in East-Tennessee. The “52” in the winner’s purse is significant of the famous “52” car number Scott drove for numerous years. The Summit Racing Equipment American Modified Series will also be on the racing card competing for $2,000-to-win. The Steel Head Late Models will be racing for $1,200-to-win, the Sportsman Late Models will also be on hand racing for $800-to-win and the Modified Streets will be gunning for $500-to-win. A huge fireworks show will light up the evening sky during this event.

This prestigious event, which is a must-see event for all race fans in the East Tennessee area, is being held in the memory of the late Scott Sexton, a mainstay in the East Tennessee racing scene for more than 25 years, who passed away in January 2013 at just 46 years of age. Scott began his racing career at the tender age of 6. Sexton was an 8-time World Karting Association World Champion before moving into Dirt Late Models in 1986, where he quickly became a fan favorite around East Tennessee, earning the nickname “Superman”. Between 1995 and 2005, Sexton won 10 Southern All Star Racing Series events between Atomic Speedway and Volunteer Speedway, and was the track champion in 1991 and 1995 at Volunteer Speedway, along with garnering many other special event wins. Scott was known as one of the most fan-friendly drivers in the area, always participating in charitable events and usually donating his winning trophies to children at the track. Sexton will always be remembered for giving back to the sport he loved so much.

Previous winners of the Scott Sexton Memorial at Volunteer Speedway are: Ray Cook of Brasstown, N.C. in 2015; Brad Neat of Dunnville, Ky. in 2014 and Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C. in 2013.

On Saturday Night July 2nd the series will roll forty minutes over to the high-banks of Tazewell Speedway for a 40-lap $5,000-to-win and $300-to-start event. The Firecracker 40 will be presented by Claiborne Marine of Tazewell. In addition to the ground-pounding Super Late Models, the Summit Racing Equipment American Modified Series will be racing for $3,000-to-win. The Sportsman Late Models ($800-to-win), Super Stocks ($600-to-win) and the Classics ($350-to-win) will also be on the racing card for the evening. A huge fireworks show will light up the night sky during this mega-event.

At Volunteer Speedway, the pit gates will open at 4:30 pm while the grandstand gates open at 5:30 pm and the driver’s meeting will be at 7:00 pm with hot laps after 7:30 pm.
