Canadian Invader Ricky Weiss Wins Scott Sexton Memorial at Volunteer Speedway

By Chris Tilley

BULLS GAP, Tenn. (July 1, 2016)—After a broken rear-end on race leader Vic Hill sent him to the pits on the final lap, Ricky Weiss of Headingly-Manitoba, Canada was able to capitalize and lead the remaining lap to win the Fourth Annual Scott Sexton Memorial at Volunteer Speedway on Friday Night.

Weiss picked up $3,052 for the victory while driving the Landair Transport, Orthopedic Institute of Western Kentucky, All Rig Towing, AIE Communications and Derrick’s Sandblasting-sponsored Vic Hill Racing Engine-powered Longhorn Chassis.

Vic Hill grabbed the lead from outside polesitter Ricky Weiss at the start of the 30-lapper and remained in control until the final lap. The rear-end on Hill’s mount broke as the field was approaching the white flag and allowed second place runner Weiss to take the lead. Parts from the broken rear-end got up under Ray Cook’s # 53 Capital Race Car and caused him to blow out a right-rear tire. Cook was running inside the top-five when the tire blew and he came to rest at the top of turn four just as the rest of the field was coming to take the checkered flag.

One caution flag slowed the event on lap nine as Bobby Giffin slowed at the top of turn four.

Vic Hill was the fastest qualifier of the event with a 12.029 seconds. Rounding out the top-five in the feature race behind Weiss was Shanon Buckingham, Skylar Marlar, David Payne and Stacy Boles.

The tour moves to Tazewell (Tenn.) Speedway on Saturday Night for the Firecracker 40 presented by Claiborne Marine of Tazewell, Tenn. paying $5,000-to-win.
