Mahoney Wheels to Ultimate Battle of the Bluegrass 19th Annual Pete Abell Memorial at Ponderosa Speedway

Junction City, KY (July 23, 2016)- Ponderosa Speedway would present its first racing program under new promoter Jamie Stumph and it would be the 19th Annual Pete Abell Memorial for the Ultimate Battle of the Bluegrass Series Super Late Models and Cody Mahoney of Hanover, IN would pick up the victory for his first win in the event and the $3,000 payday. Trent Young of Hopkinsville, KY would score the victory in Summit Racing Equipment American Modified Series action, while other feature winners included Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, IN in Pro Late Models and Pherman Stewart of Manchester, KY in KDRA Super Stocks.

The start of the Ultimate Battle of the Bluegrass Series Super Late Model 19th Annual Pete Abell Memorial would see Jeremy Hines, Cody Mahoney, and Dustin Linville go three-wide for the lead, with third place starting Linville emerging as the race leader. Chad Stapleton would join the battle for second before Mahoney would drive past Hines for the second position. Linville would build a comfortable lead until the second caution of the event waved on lap 17 for a slowed Skylar Marlar in turn three at which time, Linville would coast to a stop in turn one with mechanical problems and be done for the night. Mahoney would now have the race lead, while Stapleton would take second from Hines, while Justin Rattliff and Terry English battled for fourth. By lap 22, 12th place starting Michael Chilton would take fifth from English and snag fourth from Rattliff one round later. As Mahoney began to pull away up front, Chilton continued his charge and would take third from Hines on lap 27 and by lap 30 had caught Stapleton for second and gain the spot one circuit later. But with only four laps remaining, Chilton’s charge would come up short as Mahoney would see the checkered flag first in the Brian Bowman owned Smoker Friendly/Kimbell Midwest/B&H Electric/Valvoline/Hoosier Tire/P3 Graphix sponsored #4 Club 29 Race Car sporting a Jay (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)ens Race Engine. Chilton would finish second, while Stapleton, Hines, and 11th starting Chris Combs completed the top five. The remainder of the top ten were Terry English, Tanner English, Derek Fisher, Tripp Gerrald, and Scott Cook. Twenty- two entries would see Tommy Bailey as top qualifier at 13.204 seconds, while heat wins fell to Hines, Mahoney, and Linville.

The Summit Racing Equipment American Modified Series 30 lap, $1,500 to win main event would see Trent Young grab the lead at the start of the race and never lose the top spot and he would drive away to his fourth series win of the season aboard the David Mitchell owned Snap On Tools/Mitchell’s Tool and Motorsports/Ted Brown’s Quality Paint and Body/R&S Equipment/Emma’s Place and Feed/Young’s Well Service/Kissinger Red Angus sponsored #10y Bandit Race Car, SPEC Race Engine powered mount. Josh Harris would work past Matt Cooper in the final laps to finish second, with Cooper third, while Keith Smith and David Webb completed the top five. Twenty-one entries would see Young as top qualifier at 14.720 seconds and win a heat, while the other heats went to Smith, Harris, and Cooper.

Hudson O’Neal would take the lead in the early going of the Pro Late Model feature contest and survive a rash of caution flags throughout the course of the event and hold off the charges of Elliott Despain to claim the victory in the Todd Burns owned Peak/Tarpy Trucking/Vermeer Midwest/Midwest Sheet Metal/Kimbell Midwest/Penske Shocks sponsored #71 Club 29 Race Car powered by a Hendren GM604 engine. Despain would finish second, followed by Justin Shaw, Steven Eversole, and Remington Gill. Completing the top ten would be Wesley Brummett, Austin Burns, Chris Fair, Geraid Gault, and Michael Watson. Twenty-five entries would see Shaw as top qualifier at 14.863 seconds, while heat wins went to Gill, Todd Coffman, and O’Neal.

Pherman Stewart and Bartley Grant would battle wheel-to-wheel for the duration of the KDRA Super Stock feature contest, with Stewart edging Grant for the win in the Hibbard Fencing sponsored #1 machine. Grant would finish second, while Logan Preston, Terry Cheeks, and Mike Lunsford completed the finishing order. Twelve entries would see Jeremy Howard as top qualifier at 16.239 seconds, with heat wins going to Stewart and Grant.
