Cody Mahoney Victorious at Ponderosa’s 19th Annual Pete Abell Memorial

JUNCTION CITY, Kentucky (7/25/16) – Before a packed house at Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY on Saturday night, Cody Mahoney of Hanover, IN took the Ultimate “Battle of The Bluegrass” Super Late Model Series win in the 19th installment of Ponderosa Speedways annual Pete Abell Memorial.

Earlier in the evening, Mahoney was quickest in his qualifying group, would take the win in his heat race and line up on the outside pole for the 19th Annual Pete Abell Memorial.

Last year’s winner of the Pete Abell Memorial, Dustin Linville of Lancaster, KY grabbed the lead early in the event and appeared to have the $3000 To Win Ultimate “Battle of The Bluegrass” Super Late Model Series event well in hand until giving way to engine problems. On a caution for a single car spin, Linville slowed, pulled his machine against the wall on the entry of turn one ending his night. He would say after the event, “I had all my gauges, the engine was still running, just didn’t have any power. I didn’t want to hurt the motor so I just shut it down”

Mahoney would go on to power his way to the win in his Mahoney’s Bowman Motorsports Club 29 machine powered by a Jay (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)ens Racing Engine with sponsors Smoker Friendly, Valvoline and Diamond Auto Sales

Michael Chilton, of Salvisa, KY appeared to be the only driver who might have something for Mahoney as the laps wound down. From his starting spot twelfth on the grid, Chilton’s car came to life in the second half of the 35 lap main event. When the checkered flag flew, Chilton had trimmed Mahoney’s lead to just a couple of car lengths.

While the Ultimate “Battle of The Bluegrass” Super Late Model Series had fans on their feet frequently throughout the night, undoubtedly, the biggest storyline was Ponderosa Speedway itself and new promoter Jamie Stumph and his efforts continue the Ponderosa tradition.

Fans turned out in a big way to Ponderosa Saturday night for the Ultimate “Battle of The Bluegrass” Super Late Model Series. The speedway, hosting just it’s second event since the beginning of May saw grandstands that were at full capacity.
