Thumbs up Sport Mod...Ford engine users

Just seeing if there is anyone racing this setup. Ran UMP years back, looking to possibly get racing again, but this time, northern sport mod and ford engine. Curious if anyone is running one and keeping up with the crates. What trans are the ford guys using, 302, 351w? Crates would run a 4 bbl.....ford motor using 4412 2 bbl. Any info on combinations appreciated.....

I'm running a Ford and have built a few others also. We are running the 351w but have tried the 302 but just couldn't get enough coming off the corner and with the limited valve train you can't just throw more gear at it and be reliable. As far as trans I run a 3 speed ford but some use power glides as far as running with the crates yes it can be done.

Power wise you can get there with a 351. The problem is they are heavy compared to the Chevy motors, especially compared to the 602 crate engine.

anyone know how much? The car I have to build is already light so a little wont matter that much other than it will be up front. might have to add rear also to compensate. Ive also seen that you can get a steel bellhousing for ford engine to a 3 speed gm so that might be an option if IMCA allows mixing.

everything I am finding so far shows SBC(535) is 25 heavier than a 351w(510).....SBC is 75 pds heavier than a 302!!...hmm

602 crate is 434 as shipped...100 pds lighter than factory spec Ive found....thats scary.

As far as I know if you run the 351w with the factory heads they are about 25lbs heavier than a 350 chevy but if you have the World Product heads on that will add another 20lbs to the engine. 302 is right around 50 lighter than a 350 chevy and 75lbs lighter than a 351w according to my scale records.

Will IMCA allow a 302 stroked to a 347? could get good hp out of that and save weight.??

347 isn't legal because the stroke doesn't match the block.

if you cant stroke the 302 block , then a 1969 to 1972 351w block is the best, we have a 352inch 302 with an old nascar qualifying 38lb crank with N heads that is pure he!! . what head you thinking about?

rules say..cast 2.02 1.6......i have a worked over set of early 70's windsor heads and a stock set of 76' 351w heads i could work up.....ive seen a few aftermarket sets for 12-1400....but thinking that would be overkill having to run a 2 bbl carb

If you don't want to vouche for the aftermarket heads I think GT40 or GT40p heads would be about the best way to go they will outflow the older heads considerably and the GT40ps have a lot better combustion chamber than the older heads

dereksehi is correct, theirs plenty of explorer heads out there. ive seen several sets on e-bay at good prices or go to junk yard. the roush 200 heads were pretty good and user friendly and were not real expensive.

We run an open motor (all steel 2 bbl class) in street stock with a tremec 5 speed. Trans holds up good and is probably a good bit lighter than a cast iron 3 speed. We run world heads on a 351 and compete with 400+ chevys (15 wins in last few years)
