TED HORN 100 PRESENTED BY CASEY’S AT DuQUOIN SEPTEMBER 3 SPRINGFIELD’S BETTENHAUSEN 100 RAINED OUT The battle for USAC’s Silver Crown Championship was delayed by Saturday’s continuing rain in the Midwest, which forced postponement of the “Bettenhausen 100” at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. Race organizer Bob Sargent and USAC officials are considering a possible rain date which will be announced if and when it is firm. That sets the stage for the Saturday night, September 3 “Ted Horn 100” presented by Casey’s General Stores at the Du Quoin (Ill.) State Fair. A total of 37 cars had been pre-entered at Springfield, leading to what promises to be a banner entry list for Du Quoin. Kody Swanson’s point lead is only 13 points over Chris Windom and with the 76 points available at Du Quoin, the standings could be shaken up. Justin Grant ranks third in the points, 76 points behind Swanson. A strong Illinois contingent of drivers will be gunning for the Du Quoin victory, including two-time, defending race winner Shane (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum of Benton. With Elkhart native Chris Urish’s surprise victory in the 2013 Du Quoin race, the “Land of Lincoln” could register its fourth straight victory September 3. Other Illini hopefuls are Windom, Patrick Lawson, A.J. Fike, J.C. Bland, Zach Daum, Joey Moughan, Tad Roach and Terry Babb. Drivers from a dozen other states are also among the entries. In addition to (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum and Urish, former Du Quoin champs Jeff Swindell, Shane Cottle, Brian Tyler and Swanson are also expected to compete in the race honoring the memory of the three-time AAA National Champion Ted Horn. Pit gates are scheduled to open on Saturday, September 3 at 1:00 PM, with the grandstands at 4:00, hotlaps at 5:00, and racing at 7:00 with Modified heats followed by the Ted Horn 100 presented by Casey’s General Store. The ARCA Racing Series, presented by Menards comes to town on the following day for the General Tire Grabber 100 presented by Federated Car Care. SILVER CROWN RETURNS TO DU QUOIN ON SEPT. 3; MARKS 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST AUTO RACE ON THE “MAGIC MILE” As the USAC Silver Crown Championship makes its return to southern Illinois and the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds one-mile dirt oval under the lights on Saturday night, September 3, we celebrate the 70th birthday for automobile racing on the famed, picturesque “Magic Mile.” A hall of fame roster of drivers have seen action on the Du Quoin clay which has produced some of the most famous and infamous moments in American auto racing. William Hayes, owner of the local Coca-Cola bottling plant envisioned a fair in southern Illinois that rivaled yet complimented the established state fair in Springfield. He purchased 30 acres of land on the south side of the small southern Illinois community and in 1923 launched the first Du Quoin State Fair. In 1939, the Hayes group purchased reclaimed strip mine land adjacent to the fair property and increased the size of the fairgrounds to 1200 acres. The reclaimed mine land helped give the fair its appearance of lakes and camping areas, in addition over 1400 trees were planted as part of the landscaping effort. Near the end of World War II, construction began on a new one-mile dual purpose race track to replace the half-mile track and small wooden grandstand that were used for horse and auto racing. The half-mile grandstand burned to the ground during the summer of 1945 and, as a result, the new grandstand had to be rushed to be able to host fair-goers for entertainment that year. Steel shortages from the war prevented the grandstand from being completed and the ban on auto racing, which had not yet been lifted, prevented cars from taking to the track. Actually, August 31 of this year will mark the exact date that auto racing was first contested on the mile-long ribbon of dirt as in 1946 Labor Day fell on September 2 of that year. Thus, on Saturday August 31, 1946, sprint cars took to the mile before a large crowd in the grandstand which did not yet have the classic roof over the stage area. CSRA star Jimmy Wilburn won the 25-mile event, two days later Hal Cole took a 10-mile feature on the new track. Cars returned in 1947 with Wilburn setting a new track record of 36.91 and winning a 25-mile feature in sprint cars on August 30, while Ray Knepper won a 10-mile feature on Labor Day. Despite the success of the first events Hayes had bigger plans for his facility. Petitioning for and gaining sanction for a AAA 100-mile national championship race during the winter Hayes scheduled the event for Labor Day 1948 and to the surprise of many scheduled a second one in October. The fair race was won by future Indianapolis 500 winner Lee Wallard while the still date in October turned tragic. A cool day with a small crowd watched as popular national driving champion Ted Horn flipped in turn 4 early in the event and later passed away at the local hospital. The accident made national headlines and gave rise to the annual Ted Horn 100 national championship race during the Du Quoin State Fair. Champ cars and midgets returned in 1949, with stock cars added in 1950. 1950 also marked the first time a Du Quoin championship car race was rained out and not rescheduled. Over the next five and one half decades, auto racing fans by the thousands made the Labor Day weekend pilgrimage to Du Quoin for the motorsports program. The list of participants in those programs currently fills more than one auto racing hall of fame. Jimmy Bryan, Fred Lorenzen, A.J. Foyt, Rodger Ward, Jack Bowsher, Don White, Butch Hartman, Al Unser, Mario Andretti, Gary Bettenhausen, Dean Roper, Jack Hewitt and Frank Kimmel are just a few of the names who have visited Du Quoin’s lakeside victory lane. A new tradition continues Labor Day weekend with the first all-nighttime racing program on the mile. The USAC Ted Horn 100 takes place on Saturday night, September 3, with the ARCA General Tire Grabber stock car race on Sunday night September 4. JAY HARDIN – TRACK ENTERPRISES

I sure as hell hope The Horn Memorial doesn't get rained out. Sarge and USAC couldn't get together to reschedule The Bettenhausen 100 at Springfield so there ain't no way in hell they'll be able to reschedule Du Quoin.

I love to watch the race at some point. Is there any venue that will tape it to show those who can't be there?

    Red face

I can't speak for TEI but I personally know of nowhere that the race can be seen in it's entirety. We've been going to Du Quoin for over 20 years and to my knowledge the USAC Silver Crown race has never been on TV or offered on live internet PPV.

Now the ARCA race at Du Quoin is another story, it's been broadcast live on several different networks over the years.

About the only thing you can do is check Facebook Live or Periscope. Someone might be broadcasting parts of the race but it's doubtful that the whole race will be on.

If Sarge gets the track right the Silver Crown cars can run right out by the wall on this big ol' mile dirt track. Last year Kody Swanson and Aaron Pierce put on a show that had people shaking their heads. Unfortunately Pierce flirted with the outside wall one too many times and crashed out around lap 65 or 70. The way Pierce was floatin' it into turn 1 about 3 or 4 feet from the wall was spectacular and would literally give you goose bumps.

The Horn Memorial deserves all the attention it can get because it certainly warrants and deserves it!!

If I hear of any video coverage I'll post it.

If it shows up on MAV and you happen to see it in advance please let me know. We can't get MAV with our satellite provider but some close friends get it with their cable package and I can have them record it.

If I could attend just one Silver Crown race race per year (I generally attend 5 per year) it would be Du Quoin. The track setting is gorgeous, the facilities are as good as there is, it's run under the lights and it's one hell of a racy joint. We've watched Clauson and Larson go at it tooth and toe nail there, watched Robert Ballou run lap after lap with the right rear bouncin' off the wall and as I mentioned earlier Aaron Pierce and Kody Swanson put on a show for the ages last year. All of this action took place at average lap speeds of around 120 MPH!!

If you ever get the chance to attend the Silver Crown race at Du Quoin don't hesitate, you will NOT be disappointed!

Southern Illinois Well Represented in Ted Horn 100 at DuQuoin DuQuoin, IL- (August 28, 2016)-The deep south of the state of Illinois finds itself well represented heading into the 64th Ted Horn 100 presented by Casey’s USAC Silver Crown event at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds on Saturday night, September 3rd. The defending race winner lives just minutes from the fairgrounds while a popular former driver now sharing car owner duties with his wife has a history with the “Magic Mile” that dates back to the early 1980s. Benton’s Shane (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum grew up in the shadow of the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds and made numerous trips there with family members. Shane’s father Cliff was a local sprint car and supermodified strart who actually raced sprint cars on the Magic Mile in 1971. Cliff managed to see his son drive a variety of race cars including dirt late models, modifieds and midgets before Cliff passed away in 2008. There is no doubt Cliff was watching from above as son Shane slid behind the wheel of a championship dirt car for the first time in 2011. Decatur’s Dave Hardy along with his two sons formed Hardy Boys racing in 2011 and purchased a Stealth chassis from midget standout Tim Siner. Hardy, who fielded USAC and ARCA stock cars for DuQuoin favorite Butch Garner, saw the potential in young (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum and immediately placed him in the seat of his orange number 114. The team finished 18th at Indianapolis, 17th at Springfield and 17th at DuQuoin as Shane gathered laps and experience. In 2013 Hardy upgraded their equipment purchasing a Beast chassis once owned by Galen Fox and affectionately named “Ginger”. Two top 5 finishes at the fair miles showed the potential of the team. (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum and Hardy joined forces with Marion’s Shane Wade and in honor of the late Chuck Amati changed the number to 66 for the 2014 season. Shane set southern Illinois on its ear in 2014, leading 41 laps of the Ted Horn 100 and setting off a wild celebration that saw the crew revive an old tradition by jumping into the infield lake. A new car was purchased for 2015 and the team repeated again, with (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum leading the final 33 laps leading to another wild celebration for the driver known as the ‘Chief’. Shane is expected to be among the favorites again Saturday night at DuQuoin. Murphysboro is the home for one of the true series veterans, Randy Bateman. Bateman campaigned sprint cars and midgets for the better part of four decades across the Midwest and made his USAC Silver Crown debut at Nazareth in March of 1983 driving for Vergennes car owners Roy and Jack Harris. Bateman made his DuQuoin debut in September of that same year finishing 25th before the home crowd. Bateman made 15 additional starts on the Magic Mile with a crowd pleasing front row start in 2008. The veteran who managed to make trips nearly every year to one or more of the three dirt miles on the schedule stepped aside in 2015 and with wife Patty helping run the operation gave the reigns of his familiar number 55 to second generation driver Casey Shuman, the son of past Hoosier Hundred winner Ron Shuman. Shuman ran a partial schedule last year and finished 5th at DuQuoin. This year Shuman is a contender for the USAC Silver Crown Rookie of the Year and currently leads the rookie standings while residing 7th in the national point standings. The team recently announced a new corporate sponsor in Hucks convenience stores as well. Southern Illinois will be well represented by Hardy, (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum, Bateman and Shuman in the 64th Ted Horn 100 presented by Casey’s General Stores. Practice for the Silver Crown machines is slated for approximately 5 p.m. Saturday night, with the 100-mile main event scheduled for around 8. Jay Hardin Track Enterprises

SHANE (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)RUM GOES FOR THREE-PEAT THIS SATURDAY AT Du QUOIN Shane (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum of Benton, Ill. hopes to accomplish something unprecedented this Saturday when the USAC Silver Crown Championship cars visit the beautiful Du Quoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds for the 64th running of the “Ted Horn 100.” (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum could become the first driver to ever win the race in three consecutive years. A.J. Foyt won in 1960-61-63-64 as the 1962 race was rained out, while Tony Bettenhausen won the 1949 race and two races in 1951 after no race was held in 1950. Although (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum will rate among the race favorites Saturday, the spotlight will shine squarely on drivers Kody Swanson and Chris Windom, who are separated by only 13 points in their battle for the 2016 series title. Windom, of Canton, Ill., finished second while Swanson scored a third-place finish last year at Du Quoin. A total of 76 points are available Saturday, so third-ranked driver Justin Grant hopes a top finish can vault him into title contention going into the September 24 series finale at Rossburg, Ohio. Grant is 76 points behind Swanson. It’s been an up-and-down 2016 season for (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum. His best finish so far has been a seventh in the series opener at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track and was ninth at Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, Ind. Swanson, on the other hand, comes into Saturday’s race at Du Quoin having won the two most recent series races, taking the “Rich Vogler Classic” at Lucas Oil Raceway and the recent “Joe James/Pat O’Connor Memorial” at Salem (Ind.) Speedway. He also won the “Hoosier Hundred” at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in May. Grant, the pole winner at Terre Haute, finished second in the season opener and has added a five-race string of “top-seven” finishes. Former race winners in addition to (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum and Swanson (2010) expected to compete Saturday at Du Quoin are Chris Urish (2013), Brian Tyler (2008), Shane Cottle (2007) and Jeff Swindell (1990). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPCOMING USAC SILVER CROWN CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT: DATE: Saturday, September 3, 2016 SERIES: USAC Silver Crown Championship TRACK: Du Quoin State Fairgrounds (Du Quoin, Illinois) – 1-mile dirt oval EVENT: “Ted Horn 100” presented by Casey’s General Stores STARTING TIMES: 1pm: Registration and pit gates open, 4pm: Grandstands open, 5pm: Silver Crown Practice, 6:30pm: Silver Crown Qualifying, 8pm: “Ted Horn 100” TICKETS: Advanced Adult Tickets: $25, Advanced Children 11 and Under Tickets: $10, Day of Race Adult Tickets: $30, Day of Race Children 11 and Under Tickets: $10 TRACK ADDRESS: 655 Executive Dr., Du Quoin, IL 62832 TRACK PHONE: (618) 542-1515 or (217) 764-3200. DuQuoin Rookie Another in Long Line of Southeast Missouri Talent DuQuoin, IL-(August 30, 2016)-While a large amount of attention is paid to drivers from the home state of Illinois competing in auto races at the DuQuoin State Fair, DuQuoin’s proximity to adjoining states Indiana, Kentucky and Missouri entices drivers and fans from those states to the Magic Mile as well. Small communities in the Missouri boot heel have produced a considerable amount of racing talent over the last 30 to 40 years and send yet another talented young driver to compete at DuQuoin in Saturday night’s Ted Horn 100 presented by Casey’s General Stores. A few small Missouri towns in the Mississippi flood plain are home to several drivers who have made an impact nationally in motorsports. Jim Hall of Charleston drove dirt track late models in several series and competed on the fairground dirt miles in the ARCA Racing Series during the late 80’s and early 90’s. Sikeston’s Jimmy Brewer was a standout in winged sprint cars who also gave USAC Silver Crown cars a try in the Ted Horn 100 at DuQuoin. Charleston’s Lee Dunn followed a similar path to Brewer’s. Sikeston’s Austin Rettig competed in the ARCA series while another Daryn Clayton has been spectacular in USAC and winged sprint cars. The latest young talent from the Missouri boot heel community less than 100 miles from DuQuoin is set to make his mile dirt track debut in Saturday night’s Ted Horn 100 USAC Silver Crown Series event. At the tender age of 25 Hunter Schuerenburg has accomplished a great deal as a racing driver with a bright future ahead. Starting in karts at the local track Hunter moved to micro sprints at age 10 racing at local tracks including Southern Illinois Raceway in Marion. By age 14 he was a state and national which led Hunter and father Rick to make the quantum leap to sprint cars. He quickly became a front runner in the high powered machines. Known as “Hunterpercent” at age 16 he headed for central Indiana to race sprint cars and was named national Rookie of the Year. By age 18 he amassed double digit victories for the Indiana based Jeff Walker team including his first USAC national victory. IN 2011 he finished third in the USAC National Sprint Car standings and ran a full schedule with USAC in 2013 and 2014. In between Hunter won at local tracks in Indiana and managed to fit in a few midget races as well including the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals. For 2015 and 2016 he teamed with Marion, Illinois trucking magnate Tom Via and his Roofbolt Express company to compete in various winged and non-winged events across the country. The natural evolution would appear to be a chance at the ‘big cars’. Hunter ran on the pavement at Gateway in the Silver Crown series earlier this year and finished 8th. At DuQuoin he is part of a three car team for legendary owner Gene Nolen whose history in the Silver Crown series stretches back at least three decades, including a win in 1992 at DuQuoin with Johnny Parsons at the wheel. Saturday marks Schuerenberg’s first attempt on one of the historic fairground mile dirt tracks. Race fans from all over the Midwest including those in southeast Missouri can catch all the action at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds with practice for the Ted Horn 100 beginning at 5 and the 64th edition of the 100-mile grind at 8.

Big Time Night Racing On Tap For DuQuoin IL State Fair Saturday & Sunday USAC, ARCA, & UMP Drivers Set For Magic Mile The green flag is set to drop, sending cars at high speeds around the Magic Mile at the DuQuoin IL State Fair. The racing tradition continues for a 70th year, featuring action in the USAC Silver Crown Series, ARCA Racing Series Presented By Menards, and the UMP Modifieds. For the first time, both days of racing, Saturday and Sunday, will be held under the lights. On Saturday, September 3, the stars of the USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series will be on track for the Ted Horn 100 presented by Casey's General Stores. The event has an entry list in the upper 30's, making for a huge show that fans are looking forward to. Kody Swanson leads the current standings by just 13 over Chris Windom. Swanson has claimed three wins this season and will be tough to beat on the Magic Mile. Justin Grant, Jerry Coons, Jr., and David Byrne are top five point contenders. On Sunday, September 4, the ARCA Racing Series Presented By Menards will be competing in the General Tire Grabber 100 Presented By Federated Car Care. The event is just one of two dirt races that the series competes at every year. Winamac, IN driver, Justin Haley, took the victory at the Springfield Mile a couple weeks ago but former series champion, Grant Enfinger may be the favorite this weekend. Enfinger will be driving the Cunningham Motorsports #22 and has won the last two years at DuQuoin. NASCAR personality Ken Schrader will be no slouch either, racing in a Venturini machine. Chase Briscoe, series point leader, has claimed four wins this season and is expected to be very fast. Josh Williams, Tom Hessert, Matt Kurzejewski, and Thomas Praytor round out the top five in standings. The UMP Dirtcar Modifieds will be in action both days, running qualifying and heat races on Saturday, with the $2,000 to win feature on Sunday evening. A solid field of 17 cars are pre-entered with several more expected to attend at the event. Last year, Brian Shaw and Ken Schrader battled back and forth with Shaw taking the victory. Pit gates are scheduled to open on Saturday, September 3 at 1:00 PM, with the grandstands at 4:00, hotlaps at 5:00, and racing at 7:00 with Modified heats followed by the Ted Horn 100 presented by Casey's General Store. The ARCA Racing Series, presented by Menards comes to town on the following day for the General Tire Grabber 100 presented by Federated Car Care. Sunday pits will open at 10:00 AM, with grandstands opening at 1:00 PM. ARCA practice will be on track at 2:30 with Modifieds trackside for hotlaps at 4:30. Menards pole qualifying presented by Ansell will take place at 5:30 with the Modified feature to follow at 6:30. The green flag is scheduled to drop on the General Tire Grabber 100 presented by Federated Car Care at 8:00 PM. Advance discount tickets are available, reserved and general, for $25 each day through the DuQuoin State Fair box office or through the Track Enterprises office. Tickets for children 11 and under are $10. Day of race purchases at the gate are $5 more at $30 per person. The DuQuoin State Fairgrounds ticket office can be reached by calling 618-542-1535, while the Track Enterprises number is 217-764-3200. For full info on the event, visit www.trackenterprises.com.

(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)RUM EYES HISTORY AS HE VIES FOR 3-IN-A-ROW THIS SATURDAY AT Du QUOIN Two-time, defending “Ted Horn 100” winner Shane (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum finds himself in rarified air coming into this Saturday night’s 64th edition of the 100-mile USAC Silver Crown race at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds in southern Illinois. While there have been a pair of drivers who’ve won three and four consecutive champ car races at the “Magic Mile,” not a single driver has won in three straight calendar years. The “Tinley Park Express,” Tony Bettenhausen, won three AAA Championship races in a row: once in 1949 and twice in 1951, though no race was held at Du Quoin in 1950. A.J. Foyt topped them all at Du Quoin between the years of 1960 and 1964, leading 277 of the 400 total laps ran during the span. A rain out in 1962 interrupted Foyt’s domination, but the four wins in four races streak (and six total wins) remains unchallenged more than 50 years later. The fate of drivers aiming for a third straight Du Quoin triumph has seen a checkered past over the past seven decades. Pacific Palisades, California’s Sam Hanks would later go on to worldwide renown after capturing the 1957 Indianapolis 500, but by the mid-50s, Hanks was already the toast of the town in Du Quoin, having won the 1953 and 1954 editions of the “Ted Horn 100.” However, at the 1955 running, Sam Hanks was not in attendance. Also not in attendance to try for three in a row in later years at Du Quoin include 1969-70 winner Al Unser, 1973-74 winner Mario Andretti and 2005-06 winner Tracy Hines, who was absent in 2007 after suffering off-the-track injuries sustained in a dirt bike accident early in the season. His replacement in the Tony Stewart Racing no. 22, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., finished second behind Shane Cottle in the series’ visit to Du Quoin. Jimmy Bryan’s bid for three straight in the 1957 race ended early in the 100-miler. The Phoenix, Arizona native flipped upside down on the 23rd lap, resulting in an 18th place finish after starting sixth. Gary Bettenhausen nearly won in four consecutive calendar years in the midst of a stretch of four Du Quoin victories in five showings. Gary, the son of three-time race winner Tony Bettenhausen, started from the outside of the front row by virtue of a qualifying race win earlier in the day. But, major handling problems with the car hindered Gary’s day, sidelining him with 30 laps to go and relegating him to an 18th place result while Rich Vogler cruised into victory lane. Troy, Ohio’s Jack Hewitt came into the 1988 “Ted Horn 100,” with a run of eight wins in his 16 previous USAC Silver Crown Series starts on dirt, including the previous two at Du Quoin. Hewitt would struggle mightily on his third try, starting in the 31st position on the last row and only managing to climb to 28th before dropping out with a flat tire just 20 laps into the 100-lap race. Perhaps Shane (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum will be the one to change the course of history this Saturday night when the USAC Silver Crown cars return for the 64th running of the “Ted Horn 100.” The Benton, Illinois driver is used to rewriting the record books over the years. After all, he did become the first southern Illinois driver to pull into victory lane at the “Magic Mile” back in 2014. Now, it’s his turn to become the first to win a champ car race three straight calendar years at the “Magic Mile.” The 64th running of the “Ted Horn 100” at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds feature the USAC Silver Crown championship this Saturday night, September 3. Registration and pit gates open at 1pm. Grandstands open at 4pm. Silver Crown Practice begins at 5pm. ProSource Silver Crown Qualifying gets underway at 6:30pm. The green flag for the 100-lap, 100-mile “Ted Horn 100” flies at 8pm. RICHIE MURRAY – USAC MEDIA
