These were used back in the 80's as well. I remember Moyer and Rayburn both having them. Not sure as to why they are used though.

What OP is talking about is a 6" or so piece of solid plastic or sheet metal, and attaches to the side of the halo. Guys have been doing it for years to shield themselves for the sun early in the night. Now it seems they're leaving them on all night.

Sun & glare are correct. Been done long time. Guys used to run on front bars or wrap duct tape for Eldora thru turns 3&4 way sun sets

Honestly doubt these guys put wind tunnel time on their cars. Anyone ever heard of a DLM in the tunnel?

I think the tape or plastic for sun/light glare is needed more now that the halo and roof of the cars are 4+ inches higher than they used to be. I never used any tape on the windshield bars on my old cars because my helmet almost touched the roof and it was hard to see out of anyway. I did have to use tape on the bars early in the evening on the raised halo car though.

As far as the late model in a wind tunnel; it's been done. http://www.hotrod.com/articles/ctrp-...n-wind-tunnel/
