HORNSBY WINS A SLAM-BANG FASTRAK FINISH AT TYLER COUNTY SPEEDWAY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

MIDDLEBOURNE, WV – Like two heavyweight boxers trading haymakers at the bell of the final round, Henry Hornsby III and Kyle Lukon clinched each other with their race cars on the final lap, with 16-year-old Hornsby taking the $5,000 Fastrak Racing Series dirt late model win in the 40-lap main event at Tyler County Speedway.

Hornsby looked like he had the field covered as he sailed around the outside groove of Tyler County Speedway unchallenged for the first 30 laps of the race. Lukon charged from the 15th starting spot using the bottom groove of the track to get to the front. By the time he reached the leader Hornsby, the laps were winding down, along with Hornsby’s momentum.

Lukon charged to the inside of Hornsby with five laps to go, and knocked on the door to introduce himself to the leader, who considered Lukon a hostile guest. Hornsby moved down off the top to take away some of Lukon’s operating space, but still give himself enough momentum to stay at the head of the field.

With two laps to go, Lukon beat on the door of the leader, driving hard into the low side of turn one. Hornsby dove down to protect his territory and the two race cars slammed hard into each other. Like those two heavyweight boxers that had just head-butted each other, the two drivers seemed to step back, collect their thoughts and their machines, straighten them up, hit the throttle, and continue the battle.

Hornsby remained the leader, while Lukon reloaded for another shot at the lead and the win. On the last lap, Lukon’s final chance for victory came going into turn three. Hornsby got to the bottom first, as Lukon tried to put two cars where there was only room for one. The two race cars grinded on each other through turns three and four, but only one could win the race.

The checkered flag fell over Hornsby’s car with Lukon having to settle for second. One might have thought for a second that tempers would flare, but that was the furthest from what transpired.

Hornsby was so full of adrenalin; he was still shaking during the post-race interview and Victory Lane photo op. Lukon was smiling even though he finished second. He was happy to have been involved in such an eventful race and battle for the lead. He was the first to come to Victory Lane to congratulate Hornsby on the win.

Rick Williams took the third spot and fourth went to Tim Dohm. Marcus Minga made his long trip to West Virginia from Mississippi worthwhile with a fifth-place finish. Aaron Barley was sixth and Matt Henderson finished seventh. Kyle Thomas was eighth, Fastrak National point leader Cla Knight took the ninth spot, and Ryan Montgomery rounded out the top ten.

In preliminary action, Williams out-timed the 48-car field with a lap around the ¼-mile clay bullring in 13.377 seconds. The four ten-lap heat races were won by Hornsby, Paul Wilmoth, Williams, and Barley. The two 12-lap B-Main races were won by Ron Parker and Knight.
