Jimmy Mars Starts ‘17 Season with Pair of Top Fives in Shortened Wild West Shootout

(MENOMONIE, WISCONSIN) The Mars Racing team once again made their way out west to the Copper State to start their 2017 campaign in the 11th Annual ‘Wild West Shootout.’ The six-race miniseries was held for the first time at Arizona Speedway in Queen Creek, Arizona from January 7-15. With inclement weather wiping out the final two shows in the desert, Jimmy Mars competed in four $5,000 to win feature events and racked up a pair of Top Fives and a trio of Top Tens.

Following an eleventh place finish in his season lid lifter on January 7, Jimmy turned up the wick for the final three events of this year’s edition of the ‘Wild West Shootout.’ On Sunday, January 8, Jimmy laid down the quickest lap in his group during the qualifying session prior to finishing second in heat race action. After rolling off from the outside of the third row in the 30-lapper, the Menomonie, Wisconsin superstar picked off a trio of competitors en route to a podium third place performance behind only feature winner Bobby Pierce and runner-up Chris Simpson!

When the dirt-slinging competition heated back up at Arizona Speedway on Wednesday, January 11, Jimmy once again ran second in his loaded heat race before starting the 30-lap headliner from the outside of the fourth row. The popular driver known as the “Iceman” then charged to the front of the stellar field and battled leader Billy Moyer for the point on several different occasions. Jimmy unfortunately burnt up his right rear tire in doing so and was forced to settle for a solid fourth place showing behind only victor Moyer, Chris Simpson, and Bobby Pierce.

In what turned out to be the miniseries finale on Friday night, January 13, Jimmy blitzed past six racecars during the 30-lap feature to nail down a steady seventh place finish. You can view a race-by-race recap from the ‘Wild West Shootout’ by pointing your web browser to www.JimmyMarsRacing.com.

“We had a solid start to our season out in Arizona and ran up front a couple of nights,” quoted Mars this week on the way home from the Phoenix area. “The track was pretty top side dominant throughout the Wild West Shootout, but our car performed well and the Vic Hill motor was very strong in all four races. I had fun racing (Billy) Moyer for the win in that Wednesday show, but I just burnt my right rear tire off trying to get by him. We’ll get back to work at the shop now and keep digging to get better for the rest of the year!”

The #28 team will now take a couple of months off from racing action to turn their focus to building high-quality MB Customs Dirt Late Models and Open Wheel Modifieds for clients all over the country. With a long list of customer cars to build, Jimmy will most likely not race again until the annual ‘Illini 100’ weekend at Farmer City Raceway in Farmer City, Illinois on March 31-April 1. The two-day World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series spectacular boasts a $6,000 payday on Friday night and a $15,000 winner’s check on Saturday evening.
