Jason Hughes Claims Cotton Bowl Cash; Shady Oaks Next

Westville, Oklahoma (02/13/17) – Jason Hughes hit the ground running in 2017 by powering his Henryetta Ford #12 Hughes Chassis/ Mullins Racing Engine Modified to the $3,000 triumph with the USMTS on Friday evening at Cotton Bowl Speedway.

On Friday night Jason Hughes kicked off the 2017 campaign by traveling to Cotton Bowl Speedway (Paige, Texas) for the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) season-opener. In a field of 42 Open Wheel Modifieds, Jason secured his spot into the $2,000-to-win A-Main with a 3rd-place finish in his heat. Earning the 11th-starting position, Hughes improved two positions in the 40-lapper posting a 9th-place finish.

Returning on Friday to do battle against a field of 41 cars, Hughes failed to make up much ground in his heat race as he would start deep in the field before only managing a 7th-place finish. Coming from the 7th-starting spot in his B-Main, Jason charged to a runner-up finish behind Cade Dillard, locking his spot into the show.

Rolling off 16th for the $3,000-to-win A-Main, Hughes wheeled his way into the lead in just the first 20 laps. Holding off the field for the remaining 20 circuits, Jason Hughes captured his first victory of the season topping Stormy Scott, Johnny Scott, Chris Brown, and R.C. Whitwell at the finish line.

Wrapping up the Summit Racing USMTS Southern Region event presented by Production Jars on Saturday night, Jason advanced four positions in his heat race, edging his way into the $4,000-to-win finale with a 3rd -place finish. Earning the 9th-starting position, Jason worked his way into a podium finish by the mid-point of the 50-lap finale. Battling his way through lap-traffic in the final laps, Jason Hughes notched a 2nd-place finish behind Chris Brown with Ricky Thornton Jr., Dereck Ramirez, and Zack VanderBeek rounding out the Top 5

“It’s a lot of work,” Hughes said of his outing on Friday night. “You start out in the back of a heat race and can’t pass, then you got to work your way up through a “B” but we had a really good race car.

“I’m looking forward to the rest of the year having Ryan [Gustin] as a teammate as we go up and down the road, and hopefully we can keep going like we are.”

Hughes new teammate for 2017 – Ryan Gustin – also had a strong weekend. He scored the $2,000 victory in the opening round.

Jason sits in first in the USMTS point standings after the completion of the first weekend. Complete results and the latest standings can be found at www.USMTS.com .

This coming weekend Hughes Motorsports will again find themselves in action in the state of Texas as they make the trip to Shady Oaks Speedway (Goliad, Texas) for another tripleheader of racing action. For more information on the event, please visit www.USMTS.com .
