Blue Ridge, GA – May 13, 2017- After the event had been postponed twice due to inclement, the third time would prove to be the charm for the Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series at Blue Ridge Motorsports Park in Blue Ridge, GA on Saturday evening as David Payne of Murphy, N.C. would lead all 30 laps of the main event and score the victory.

The victory for Payne marked his first-career win with the Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series and would see the veteran Tarheel State driver $3,700 for his efforts, as the event paid $3,000 to win, plus Payne also collected the Chip Stewart Designs $200 fast time award and was also the winner of the $500 to win Wildside Dash presented by Wildside Custom Trailers and Conversions. Payne’s checkered flag in the contest would come aboard his familiar Gibson Motorsports/Payne Excavating/Interstate Welding/PPM Racing Products/American Racer Tire/Base Racing Fuel/Schaeffer’s Oil sponsored #8 Capital Race Car powered by a Jay (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)ens Race Engine.

David Payne would take the lead at the start of the 30 lap, $3,000 to win contest, while Kurt English, Skylar Marlar, and Kenny Collins would battle three-wide for the second position, with Marlar claiming the spot. As Payne set a torrid pace at the point, Shawn Chastain would quickly flex his muscles and would work past Collins for the fourth position and begin to immediately battle English for third before claiming the spot on lap four, with Collins shuffling English back one more position on the next circuit. The first caution would wave on lap six when eighth place running Jeremy Ledford would roll to a stop at the top of turn four. The restart would see Marlar challenge Payne momentarily, but caution would again slow the action on lap eight when George Mashburn would loop his machine on the frontchute. The restart would also be void as fifth place running English could not get his mount to come up to full power and he would drop to the inside and roll to a stop inside of turn one. The next restart would also come as Casey Turman and Justin Gravley would tangle in turn one and the incident would see Turman’s night be finished.

With action again finally back underway, Marlar would again briefly challenge Payne for the race lead, while now-running fifth place Ray Cook would get pressure from Jamie Oliver with Oliver taking the position on lap ten. Payne would begin to pull away up from Marlar a bit at this point, but would have to contend with slower traffic as the halfway signal was displayed on lap fifteen. However, the final caution of the race waved on lap sixteen as Mashburn would drive his entry to the infield with fire blazing from beneath the hood of his entry. This would give Payne clear track when the race resumed and Payne would hold a comfortable lead until lap twenty-five when he once again started working lapped traffic. With two laps remaining Payne would get bottled up behind slower traffic and this would allow Marlar to close in to challenge one last time as the white flag was displayed. Payne would work traffic better in turns one and turn and see the checkered flag first, with Marlar claiming second, while Chastain would complete the podium finishers in the third position. Collins and Oliver would complete the top five. The remainder of the top ten would be 12th place starter Shane Tankersley, Carder Miller, Levi Ashby, 16th place starter Craig Greer, and Justin Gravley.

The Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series will return to action on Saturday May 20 at Richmond Raceway in Richmond, KY for the 1st Annual Mike Roland Memorial paying $10,000 to win. The event will be co-sanctioned with the Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Bonus Series presented by Sunoco Race Fuels and Tennessee RV. The Brucebilt Iron-Man Modified Series will also be back in action for a 25-lap $1,200 to win event.
