Discovered them while in the Midwest (Wisconsin). Basically a cheese stick, but in more of a ball form with American cheese instead of Mozzarella. Goes great with a bacon cheeseburger and a brew.
The cheese curds are popular in canada and northeast. These are pieces of curled milk. They are best when just made. We used to get them from the milk plant when we delivered a load of milk from the dairy farms.
