Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis is one of the raciest pavement tracks there is, and one of my favorites all around as it can produce great action. Have seen many a good show there and this one shouldn't be any different. If you have never been, WELL worth checking out.

Also of note, unless this has changed, coolers are allowed as long as they are 14x14x14 and don't have glass in them.

SANTOS RETURNS TO FORM LEADING INTO FRIDAY’S CARB NIGHT CLASSIC AT LUCAS OIL RACEWAY Richie Murray – USAC Media Indianapolis Raceway Park, O’Reilly Raceway Park or Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. No matter which name it has been called throughout its 57-year history, there are distinct eras at the .686-mile paved oval which have been defined by the domination of drivers who proved to be nearly unbeatable in USAC competition. In the last 20 years alone, Mike Bliss, Dave Steele, Tracy Hines and the current authority displayed by brothers Tanner and Kody Swanson, have each reigned supreme for a period of time at LOR. They are among a set of drivers that, when you saw their team unload their Midget, Sprint Car or Silver Crown in the pit area, it was nearly a foregone conclusion that, barring unforeseen circumstances, the race for the win at LOR would have to go through them. Coming into the Friday, May 26 “Carb Night Classic” for the USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series at Lucas Oil Raceway, we are reminded of the command of the mantle that Bobby Santos had for a stretch during the late 2000s/early 2010s. The Franklin, Massachusetts native began 2006 with his first LOR victory in the “Night Before the 500” USAC National Midget race and, in July, won the first of his three career USAC National Sprint Car features at the track. And it came in spectacular fashion. With just two laps remaining, Santos trailed a half-lap behind race leader Eric Gordon. A late caution bunched up the field for a green-white-checker finish and Santos took advantage. When the two came out of turn four side-by-side with the checkered flag waving, the two tangled, sending both hard into the inside wall. Santos crossed the line first, with Gordon in second, marking one of the few occasions in auto racing history in which the winning driver never even saw the checkered flag because his car was rolling backwards across the finish line! In 2009, Santos captured his first career Silver Crown race of any kind, albeit in much less spectacular fashion than his sprint car win three years earlier, at LOR after getting by Chet Fillip and leading the final 73 laps on his way to victory. In 2012, Santos swept both Silver Crown events at LOR, leading 187 of a possible 200 laps combined in the two events. Lurking in the shadows, though, was second-place finisher Kody Swanson, which would prove to be a harbinger of things to come in the following years. In the ensuing years, Santos has recorded LOR finishes of 16th, 5th, 5th, 3rd, 4th, 15th and 4th. While by no means are his results poor, they are not up to the standards of Santos who expects to compete for wins. Since 2013, though, 617 of 700 laps run in the seven Silver Crown visits to LOR have been led by either Tanner or Kody Swanson. However, 80 of the 83 laps not led by a Swanson were claimed by Santos in last May’s “Carb Night Classic.” The mojo had returned to the 31-year-old Santos for the first time in quite a while at LOR, but with 20 laps to go, while leading, the engine went sour, ending what appeared to be a return to victory lane. It was a bitter disappointment that lingered throughout the remainder of 2016 and put him and his DJ Racing team on notice that changes needed to be made both inward and outward to get back on top of the game. “I actually spent a lot of time on the small details this past winter to be better for 2017,” Santos explains. “I got in the gym and lost 25+ lbs. and I feel great. I focused on the details of the car to take weight off it and just tried to be the best prepared that I could for each race this season.” The changes paid large dividends when the 2017 season opened at Phoenix Raceway’s “Copper Cup” in late April. Santos set ProSource Fast Qualifying time, then waged war with David Byrne throughout much of the 100-lapper before taking the lead for good by using a crossover move to get past Byrne with eight laps remaining to earn a long overdue win, his first in the series in nearly two seasons. The versatile 2010 NASCAR Whelen Modified champion and NASCAR Truck and Xfinity series veteran has plans to complete 600 laps of racing this weekend, beginning with Friday night’s “Carb Night Classic” Silver Crown 100-lapper at Lucas Oil Raceway, then follow it up Saturday night with the world’s only 500-lap sprint car race, the “Little 500” at Anderson (Ind.) Speedway. “I believe past experience always helps a racer,” said Santos who aims to make his 15th LOR Silver Crown and fourth Little 500 start this weekend. “I pride myself on adapting well to different styles of cars and racing.” “We thought we were going to win one at IRP (LOR) last year, but it didn't work out.” Santos continued. “I love the track and am always confident to race there.” USAC and Track Enterprises have teamed up to present a Superticket for admission to three of its upcoming marquee events – the “Tony Hulman Classic,” the “Hoosier Hundred” and the “Carb Night Classic” on May 24-25-26 – leading up to the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500. The three-straight nights of racing in Indiana present open wheel racing at its finest from the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship as well as the USAC Silver Crown Champ Cars Series presented by TRAXXAS on both dirt and pavement. Fans will receive a savings of $20 by purchasing their own Week of Indy Superticket that’s good for admission to Terre Haute, the Indiana State Fairgrounds and Lucas Oil Raceway on May 24-25-26. To purchase a Superticket, visit https://usacracing.ticketspice.com/2017-week-of-indy or call the Track Enterprises office at 217-764-3200. As always, individual tickets for each “Week of Indy” event will be available at regular price on race day at the gate. Pit gates for the “Carb Night Classic” open at noon while spectator gates open at 2:45pm. Silver Crown practice begins at 4pm, ProSource Qualifying at 5:30pm and racing at 6:30pm. A special autograph session featuring all the Silver Crown drivers will occur from 7:15 to 7:45pm, just prior to the green flag for the 100-lap Silver Crown main event.

BALLOU GOES FOR UNPRECEDENTED 3-IN-A-ROW WEDNESDAY IN 47TH HULMAN CLASSIC By: Richie Murray – USAC Media Two weeks ago, in his return to the (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)pit of a USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car for the first time in eight months, Robert Ballou made the contingent on hand stand up and take notice that he hadn’t missed a beat. His second race back in Eldora Speedway’s #LetsRaceTwo resulted in a commanding victory and placed him right at the top of the totem pole of favorites heading into this Wednesday night’s “Tony Hulman Classic” at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track. It was a moment that recalled some of the greatest USAC comebacks seen in recent history such as Lee Kunzman’s National Midget win at Tri-County Speedway in Cincinnati in 1971, where he returned to victory in his first race after suffering a broken neck, arm and severe burns in a sprint crash at Missouri’s I-70 Speedway in 1970. Or Pancho Carter’s return after severe lower extremity injuries in a testing crash at Phoenix, in which he won his first two USAC Sprint Car appearances at Indianapolis Raceway Park and Winchester (Ind.) Speedway after a five-month layoff. The “Hulman Classic” is an event in which Ballou has won twice in a row. Only two other drivers have accomplished that feat: Steve Butler (1987-88) and Levi Jones (2008-09). Rocklin, California’s Ballou has unprecedented territory to claim this time around as he aims to become the first driver to win three consecutive “Hulmans.” Only Jones (2005-08-09) and Cary Faas (1992-94-98) have even won three total in the 46-year history of the event. In last year’s “Hulman Classic,” Ballou and Thomas Meseraull waged war in a back-and-forth slider-fest before Ballou pulled ahead with less than 10 laps remaining to prevail at the Action Track. Ballou is among five past winners expected to compete in Wednesday night’s race, including Dave Darland (1993 & 2014), Jerry Coons, Jr. (2010 & 2013), Jon Stanbrough (2002 & 2007) and Chris Windom (2011). Windom has won the last two appearances by USAC at Terre Haute, a National Sprint Car triumph in October of 2016 and the “Sumar Classic” Silver Crown season opener in April of this year. The “Hulman Classic” began with George Snider’s victory in 1971 and continues today as the longest, annually-contested event on the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car calendar. Except for a brief period between 1988 and 1991 when the event moved to the pavement at Indianapolis Raceway Park, the Hulman Classic has always been held at the half-mile Terre Haute Action Track. Former winners of the race include ten Indianapolis 500 veterans, 14 past USAC National Sprint Car championships and even an NHRA Top Fuel Drag Racing star, Doug Kalitta. Pit gates open for the Hulman Classic at 3pm with the grandstands set to open at 4. Cars hit the track at 6:30. Fans will receive a savings of $20 by purchasing their own “Week of Indy” Superticket now at https://usacracing.ticketspice.com/2017-week-of-indy. The Superticket is your golden ticket for admission to all three of this week’s USAC races at a steal of a price! Tony Hulman Classic Rained Out Hoosier Hundred & Carb Night Still On For Thursday/Friday (Terre Haute, IN) The first of three nights of racing for USAC’s “The Week Of Indy” has been postponed due to steady rainfall in Western Indiana. The Tony Hulman Classic was set to bring in 30+ USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Cars and the Scott’s Custom Colors UMP Modifieds. The event will be rescheduled. Two dates are being considered and officials are checking to confirm which one will be best. The new date will likely be released at the Hoosier Hundred on Thursday. The “Week Of Indy” will now get underway on Thursday, May 25 with the Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, which has a much improved forecast. With the postponement of the Tony Hulman Classic, fans, teams, and drivers will start making the trek an hour to the east for Thursday’s Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, IN. The event will feature the USAC Silver Crown Champ Cars presented by Traxxas. Also racing will be the Mid-American Stock Car Series. The event is rich in tradition and this year’s field is expected to be in upwards of 40 cars for the 100-lap event. The weather forecast for Thursday has shown great improvement with any chances for rain ending in the early morning hours. The track at the Indiana State Fairgrounds holds up well with wet weather as proved last year when a two hour downpour came through at noon on raceday. USAC Silver Crown hotlaps will be first on track at 5:00 with their qualifying session around 6:15. The Mid-American Stock Car Series will run their feature shortly after 7:00 and the USAC Silver Crown Series Hoosier Hundred will take the green around 8:00 PM. Also still on schedule for this week is the Carb Night Classic on Friday, May 26th at Lucas Oil Raceway. On track will be the USAC Silver Crown Series for a 100-lap event. A solid field of cars is expected. The Mid-American Stock Car Series will also be making their return to the Brownsburg, IN oval. Mid-American practice will begin at 3:15, Silver Crown at 4:00, Champ Car qualifying at 5:30, Mid-American Stock car feature at 6:30, and the Carb Night Classic for the Champ Cars will go green at 8:00 PM. Fans who have purchased a “Week Of Indy” Superticket, will be able to use it on the remaining two events this week, as well as the Tony Hulman Classic makeup date. If you have any additional questions, call 217-764-3200. For more information on the “Week Of Indy” events, visit www.trackenterprises.com. Despite the Terre Haute Action Track rainout, there are two great races left in this week's USAC Racing's "Week Of Indy". FINAL (and First and only thanks to Mother Nature) RACE DAY of the 2017 Week of Indy at Lucas Oil Raceway! The USAC Racing Silver Crown Series take to the pavement for the second time this season at a track which has seen the likes of Ryan Newman, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Mike Bliss, and many others grace victory lane in competition. Accompanying the USAC Silver Crown Series event will be the Mid-American Stock Car Series.
