By Michael Despain

JUNCTION CITY, KY – June 10, 2017 – The Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series would invade Ponderosa Speedway for the 2nd Annual Big Daddy and Chris Combs of Isom, KY would etch his name in the record books by scoring the $3,088 payday and becoming the sixth different winner in six events for the tour in 2017. In the companion Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series main event, Keith Smith of Stanton, KY would park his entry in victory lane and pick up the $1,288 victory and become the fourth different series winner in four events.

Combs would visit victory lane in the Super Late Model portion of the program in the Combs Brothers Racing/Mountain Truck Parts/Daniel Dotson Attorney at Law/Tim Short Automotive/Adams Brothers Plumbing and Electric/Collins Septic Service sponsored #47 Swartz Race Car powered by a Vic Hill Race Engine. Smith’s win the Modified portion of the event would come in the Jim and Lisa Smith owned Better Built Barns/Valvoline/Poske’s Performance Parts sponsored #1s Bandit Race Car sporting a Mullins Race Engine.

Victor Lee would survive a turn three slidejob from Tripp Gerrald on the opening lap of the thirty lap Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series main event to have the lead over Gerrald and Chris Combs on the opening circuit of the contest. By lap five, Lee had opened his lead a bit, with Combs pressuring Gerrald for second, while John Whitney and James Williamson ran fourth and fifth. Lee would start to work slower traffic at the rear of the field on lap nine and would build a comfortable lead. However, as the field saw the halfway indicator on lap fifteen, Lee’s mount started showing smoke from the beneath the car that would be coming from a tire rubbing on car’s bodywork. Gerrald and Combs would close in on Lee and Gerrald would take the top spot from Lee on lap eighteen.

Lee’s trouble would continue as Combs would mount a charge on Lee and take the second position on lap twenty prior to the only caution of event for a spin by Jerry Gibson III on lap twenty-one. The restart would see Combs put his mount on the topside of the racing surface and would pull alongside Gerrald, with Combs taking the race lead on lap twenty-two. Combs would keep Gerrald at bay in the closing laps of the contest to claim the race victory, with Gerrald finishing in the second position, while Lee would settle for the final podium position in third. Williamson and Tommy Bailey would complete the top five. The remainder of the top ten would be Whitney, Levi Ashby, Jeff Neubert, Joey Standridge, and Doug Smith.

Victor Lee would snag the race lead at the start of the twenty-five lap Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series feature event and would keep J.T. Ayers behind him, while Shon Flanary, Blake Brown, David Webb and Jimmy Payne would mix it up for the positions three through six. Lee would start working slower traffic on lap eight and would have a comfortable lead when the caution waved on lap sixteen for Tim Patrick, who had slowed in turn two.

Seventh place starting Keith Smith had charged his way toward the front by this point and would take second from J.T. Ayers on lap eighteen and would a caution to close the field up on lap twenty when Brown, Flanary, and Webb would tangle exiting turn four. The restart would see Smith go the high side of the track and Smith would motor past Lee to claim the lead on lap twenty-one and never look back in scoring the victory. Lee would settle for second, while Payne would finish in the third position. Ayers would finish fourth, while Brown recovered to claim fifth. Completing the top ten finishers would be Mikah Reams, Cy Cundiff, Webb, Flanary, and Jamie Mosley.

The next event for the Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series will be at Tazewell Speedway in Tazewell, TN on Saturday July 1 and pay $5,000 to the winner.
