Clayton Miller Masters Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series Butch Shay Memorial at Richmond Raceway

By Michael Despain

RICHMOND, KY – June 17, 2017 – The Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series would sanction the Modified portion of the 3rd Annual Butch Shay Memorial on Saturday evening at Richmond Raceway and Clayton Miller of Elkton, Ky. would pick up the win and the $2,100 payday and become the first repeat winner with the tour in 2017.

Miller’s second series victory of the season would come aboard the Lexington Landscape/Joe’s Small Engine/C. Blackwell Construction/Dane Elliott Industrial/Wilson’s Printworks/Mark Bush Racing/Markham Automotive sponsored #15 Bandit Race Car powered by a Kevin Fisher Race Engine.

A five-car tangle on the opening lap of the event exiting turn four would slow the start of the event, with only one car not able to continue. The second attempt at a start would see Blake Brown jump to the race lead, with Clayton Miller, Shon Flanary, Jimmy Robinson, and Jimmy Lennex, Jr. giving chase. Miller would immediately jump to the top side of the track and would take the lead off turn four to complete lap three. Lennex, Jr. and Robinson would begin to battle for fourth, with Lennex, Jr. taking the spot on lap six. A slowed Oscar Marshall machine in turn two would slow the action on lap seven and the restart would see Miller, Brown, and Flanary first through third, while Robinson would take the fourth position back away from Lennex, Jr. on lap seven, however, Lennex, Jr. would return volley and reclaim the spot four circuits later on lap eleven. The next caution would wave on lap fourteen when Henry Lawson would spin in turn two.

The restart would see the field work past the halfway mark of the event and John Jackson would begin to challenge Robinson for the fifth position and would take the position on lap nineteen, while Miller would maintain the lead, with Brown and Flanary still giving chase. A debris caution on lap twenty-one and another caution on lap twenty-two for a stopped Dennis DeBoard in turn two would slow the action momentarily. This restart would see Brown begin to pressure Miller a bit for the lead, while Flanary would step to the high side of the track to challenge Brown for second. The final caution of the event flew for a spin by Robinson on lap twenty-seven to set a quick sprint to the finish. The restart would see Brown pressure Miller once again, while Flanary pressured Brown for second and Wade Rookard would charge the top side and take fifth from Jackson on lap twenty-seven. Brown would mount one final charge on the final lap, but Miller would hang on for the win, with Brown second, and Flanary third. Lennex, Jr. would finish fourth, with Rookard fifth. The remainder of the top ten would be Jackson, David Adams, Zach Powers, Vernon Soeder, and DeBoard.

The Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series next event will be Saturday July 1 at Tazewell Speedway in Tazewell, Tenn. paying $1,000 to win. Also on the racing card at Tazewell Speedway on July 1 will be the Schaeffer’s Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series racing for $5,000 to win in an event that will be co-sanctioned by the Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals Bonus Series presented by Sunoco Race Fuel and Tennessee RV.
