DuQuoin State Fair "Magic Mile" Set For Labor Day Weekend Showdown USAC, ARCA, & MODS To Pack Stands In Traditional Event (DuQuoin, IL) After a highly successful weekend of Illinois State Fair racing, the staff of Track Enterprises is now preparing for a huge Labor Day weekend of auto racing at the DuQuoin State Fair, in DuQuoin, IL. The Magic Mile will be hosting the USAC Silver Crown Series presented by Traxxas, the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, and the UMP DIRTcar Modifieds. This year, action will be back to a Sunday-Monday program, as it was for many years. Racing begins on Sunday, September 3, as the USAC Silver Crown Series presented by Traxxas heads to the track to run in the Ted Horn 100. The resurgence of the Silver Crown Champ Cars was again evident at the Illinois State Fair event last weekend, as 40 cars were trackside. Unfortunately, some engine issues and crashes took the field down to 34 for the 100-mile race, but that's still more than a scheduled starting field. Another outstanding group is expected at DuQuoin next Sunday. Justin Grant claimed his first ever Silver Crown win in Springfield and will again be one of the favorites in DuQuoin. The Bettenhausen 100 saw a number of lead changes and great field parity. Drivers like Grant, Kody Swanson, Jerry Coons, Jr., and Brian Tyler were all threats. Throw in the veteran, Jeff Swindell, who started 28th and finished 3rd, and it was a great race. Chris Windom was last year's Ted Horn 100 winner. Adding to the mix on Sunday, September 3 will be retired NASCAR driver and USAC Hall of Fame inductee, Ken Schrader. The Fenton, MO driver will be driving the McQuinn Motorsports #14 in addition to his duties in the Federated Auto Parts #9 DIRTcar Modified for the weekend. It will be Schrader's first start in a Silver Crown dirt race since the mid 1980's. The DIRTcar UMP Modifieds will be racing for the $2,000 top prize in the 24th edition of the Bill Oldani Memorial. Last year, 22 Modifieds were pitside for the popular event. The Modifieds practice/qualify, and run their heats on Sunday and compete in the feature on Monday afternoon. Last season, Schrader won the event with a hard-charging Jesse Snyder finishing second. Josh Sissom, Terry James, and Jason Beaulieu completed the top five. All 22 drivers took the green but a first lap melee eliminated a few strong contenders. On Labor Day Monday, the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards are trackside for the 64th edition of the General Tire Grabber 100. Last year's race was won by Tom Hessert on Sunday night but this year, the race is back to its traditional Monday afternoon date. The last five laps were spectacular last year, with Schrader, Chase Briscoe, and Kelly Kovski battling hard for the win. Pit gates are scheduled to open on Sunday, September 3 at 1:00 PM, with the grandstands at 4:00, hotlaps at 5:00, and racing at 7:00 with Modified heats followed by the Ted Horn 100. The ARCA Racing Series, presented by Menards comes to town on the following day for the General Tire Grabber 100 presented by Federated Car Care. Monday pits will open at 6:30 AM, with grandstands opening at 9:00. ARCA practice will be on track at 10:45 with Modifieds trackside for hotlaps at 12:00 noon. General Tire pole qualifying will take place at 12:30 with the Modified feature to follow at 1:30. The green flag is scheduled to drop on the General Tire Grabber 100 presented by Federated Car Care at 3:00 PM. Advance discount tickets are available, reserved and general, for $25 each day through the DuQuoin State Fair box office or through the Track Enterprises office. Tickets for children 11 and under are $10. Day of race purchases at the gate are $5 more at $30 per person. The DuQuoin State Fairgrounds ticket office can be reached by calling 618-542-1535, while the Track Enterprises number is 217-764-3200. Tony Stewart To Race At Du Quoin State Fair Event 3-Time NASCAR Cup Champ To Compete With Modifieds (Du Quoin, IL) The excitement continues to build for the Labor Day weekend races at the DuQuoin State Fair. In addition to a full field of USAC Racing Silver Crown Champ Cars expected for the Ted Horn 100 and a strong field of ARCA RACING SERIES competitors coming for the General Tire Grabber 100, the DIRTcar Racing UMP Modified entry list is filling up with some great competition. With the countdown around one week until cars hit the track, Track Enterprises has announced that 3-Time NASCAR Cup Series champion, Tony Stewart will be on hand competing with the DIRTcar Modifieds. Tony Stewart, who retired from NASCAR competition at the end of the 2016 racing season, has been busy wheeling his 410 winged sprint car, promoting his Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champion Sprint Car Series, and running Eldora Speedway. For the first time this season, Stewart will get back behind the wheel of a Modified, which will excite fans at the Magic Mile. Stewart is not a stranger of Du Quoin, as he previously raced there in a Modified in 2011, coming from the back of the field to finish second to Ken Schrader. Stewart also won an ARCA Racing Series event at the one-mile dirt track in 2003, after finishing 2nd to Frank Kimmel in 2001, which was his first appearance at the track. Last year, over 20 Modifieds were in action at Du Quoin, with Schrader racing to victory. This year, 25+ entries have already arrived at the office with more expected for the $2,000 to win event. In addition to Stewart and Schrader, who will be driving team cars, fans will see Jesse Snyder, Curt Rhodes, Brian Shaw, Tyler Nicely, and many more names looking to take the top prize. A number of fans may look at the Modifieds as a support class during the Labor Day weekend races at the Du Quoin State Fair, however, it has really gained a lot of steam over the years with strong fields of cars and has become a show of its own. This year, the Labor Day Monday feature, which leads up to the ARCA General Tire Grabber 100, could be the best in several years. Pit gates are scheduled to open on Sunday, September 3 at 1:00 PM, with the grandstands at 4:00, hotlaps at 5:00, and racing at 7:00 with Modified heats followed by the Ted Horn 100 for the USAC Silver Crown Series. Advance discount tickets are available, reserved and general, for $25 each day through the Du Quoin State Fair box office or through the Track Enterprises office. Tickets for children 11 and under are $10. Day of race purchases at the gate are $5 more at $30 per person. The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds ticket office can be reached by calling 618-542-1535, while the Track Enterprises number is 217-764-3200. LARGEST Du QUOIN CAR COUNT IN OVER A DECADE EXPECTED FOR SUNDAY’S TED HORN 100! By: Richie Murray – USAC Media The largest “Ted Horn 100” car count in over a decade is expected this Sunday, September 3, for the return of the USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series presented by TRAXXAS racing to the “Magic Mile” at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds. Thirty-eight cars have entered, making it the most expected entrants for the event since 2004. The list is highlighted by eight past Du Quoin victors leading off with defending race winner Chris Windom.* The St. Louis resident engaged a spirited duel with 1990 race winner Jeff Swindell down the stretch, taking the lead from Swindell with just three laps remaining to score his first win on a dirt mile.* Windom used that victory as a springboard to a Silver Crown title in 2016, but he hasn’t won in the series since the season-opening “Sumar Classic” at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track in April. Germantown, Tennessee’s Swindell, meanwhile, has made his last two Silver Crown appearances memorable.* He led a race-high 55 laps at Du Quoin on his way to a second-place run last September. *Just two weeks ago, Swindell blitzed from 28th to 2nd at Springfield before Kody Swanson got back by coming to the white flag to drop him to a memorable 3rd place run to earn KSE Hard Charger of the Race honors. Swanson, of Kingsburg, Calif., has won on all the dirt miles occupying the Silver Crown schedule, but Du Quoin has a special place in his heart as it was the venue that hosted his first series win back in 2010. *The two-time Silver Crown champ and current point leader has since reeled off 17 more, but none in southern Illinois since that day. Shane (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum of nearby Benton, Illinois, is the only two-time winner of the “Ted Horn 100” entered for this Sunday’s race.* Back in 2015, he became just the tenth driver to win the race in back-to-back years, joining Tony & Gary Bettenhausen, Sam Hanks, Jimmy Bryan, A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, Mario Andretti, Jack Hewitt and Tracy Hines.* This weekend, he can join the ranks of drivers who’ve won at Du Quoin at least three times in their champ car careers alongside Tony & Gary Bettenhausen, A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Tom Bigelow, Jack Hewitt and Chuck Gurney. Additionally, four drivers aim on Sunday to repeat their past Du Quoin glory: Russ Gamester (1997 winner), Shane Cottle (2007), Brian Tyler (2008) and Chris Urish (2013). Just as impressive of a list includes drivers still seeking their first Silver Crown triumph at Du Quoin, including USAC Triple Crown Champions Dave Darland and Jerry Coons, Jr. as well as longtime NASCAR star and past USAC Silver Crown and National Sprint Car titlist Ken Schrader, plus 2015 USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car champion Robert Ballou. Lincoln, Indiana’s Darland makes his debut appearance in Hans Lein’s No. 97 Sunday.* The pair raced together on the USAC National Midget scene as recently as 2013.* Similarly, Ballou of Rocklin, Calif., will take the reins of the Klatt Enterprises No. 6 for the initial time as he makes his first trip back to Du Quoin since dominating the 2013 race before running out of fuel while leading late in the race. Four years between starts is hardly a blip compared to Schrader’s 32-year absence from action in a USAC Silver Crown car on a dirt surface.* Though his last appearance in a dirt car at Du Quoin came in 1985, Schrader has been no stranger to Du Quoin’s victory lane.* Not only has he won in an ARCA Stock Car on three occasions, he’s also won in a modified at Du Quoin in four of his last five appearances. Tucson, Arizona’s Jerry Coons, Jr. set ProSource quick time in the series’ most recent event at the Springfield Mile and sits second in points behind Swanson.* A Du Quoin victory not only would be his first there, it would also be his first victory in the series in three seasons. The “Ted Horn 100” begins this Sunday with pits opening at 1pm and grandstands opening at 4pm.* Silver Crown practice runs from 5-6:10pm with ProSource Qualifying scheduled for 6:30pm.* Pre-race ceremonies are slated for 7:30pm with the 100-mile race ready to fire at 8pm. Advance adult tickets are $25.* Advance tickets for children 11 and under are $10.* On the day of the race, adult tickets are $30 and children 11 and under are $10.* An adult pit pass is $35 while children 11 and under are $20. NASCAR Veteran Schrader Preparing For Busiest Of Race Weekends Four Races In Four Days At Lincoln, Macon, & Du Quoin (Macon, IL) It's not a secret that retired NASCAR driver, Ken Schrader, still loves to drive race cars. The Fenton, MO driver ran his last NASCAR Cup event in 2013 but has continued racing dirt Modifieds on a regular basis, competing in well over 50 events per year. This weekend, the 62-year old will have a real busy stretch, competing in four feature events, over the course of four days at three different race tracks. It all begins on Friday, September 1 at Lincoln Speedway, in Lincoln, IL when the Federated Car Care #9 Modified competes in the season finale at the track. It will be Brandt FIVE BUCK Night at the track, giving fans a chance to see a six division race program for just $5. In addition to the highly talented group of Modified drivers at the track, Big Ten Pro Late Models, Big Ten Street Stocks, Sportsman, Hornets, and POWRi Lucas Oil DII Midgets will be in action. Schrader and his team then travel to Macon Speedway, in Macon, IL for Saturday night's events. Macon, a 1/5-mile, high banked bull-ring is one of three tracks that Schrader is a co-owner of. Schrader will compete in the Billingsley Elite Wash Modified division, where he had won an event earlier this season, fending off fellow NASCAR personality, Kenny Wallace. Macon's Saturday event has Pro Late Models, Street Stocks, Sportsman, B-Mods, Hornets, and Beach House Micros in addition to the Modifieds. From the two Central Illinois races, the attention turns about 2.5 hours south at the Du Quoin State Fair for a big Sunday/Monday racing doubleheader. Schrader will be looking to defend his title in the Bill Oldani Memorial Modified division, after a dominant effort one season ago. While Schrader has won four out of the last five Du Quoin Modified events, no doubt, he'll have to step it up a little more as the entry list is filled up with some stout competition including 3-time NASCAR Cup champion Tony Stewart, who will be driving a team car to Schrader. A total of 30 Modified pre-entries have come into the Track Enterprises office for the Modified show. "I have a special place in my heart for Du Quoin, as I went there for the first time in 1963 with my dad and slept in the wagon overnight." Schrader added, "This year it's really exciting, getting a chance to race the Modified, the Silver Crown car, and having Tony in one of my Modifieds. Should be fun." The event that may just bring the biggest excitement out of Schrader will be his USAC Silver Crown start in Sunday's Ted Horn 100 in Du Quoin. It has been 32 years since Schrader has run a Silver Crown car at the Magic Mile track. The Silver Crown event has 36 cars on the pre-entry list, with Schrader's being the McQuinn Motorsports #14. Schrader's Sunday will be extremely busy, having to hotlap and qualify the Modified and Silver Crown car, plus run a heat race in the Modified, and finish off with the 100 lapper for the Silver Crown cars. Schrader is looking forward to wearing the car owner hat as well. "I'm really looking forward to Monday too, as we'll have two cars in the ARCA race with Austin Theriault, who's leading the points and Brandon Grosso, a dirt mod driver from the Northeast. Austin was really close at Springfield so hopes are high for Du Quoin." All four events are promoted by Track Enterprises, based in Macon, IL. For info on Lincoln Speedway's Friday event, visit lincolnspeedwayil.com. For Macon Speedway's info on Saturday, visit www.maconracing.com. ILLINI NATIVES HAVE WINNING HISTORY IN TED HORN 100 AT Du QUOIN By: Jay Hardin - Track Enterprises Staff No less than 14 participants in this Sunday, September 3rd’s “Ted Horn 100” at Du Quoin have ties to the home soil of Illinois whether they are a car owner or driver.* Little wonder that some on the USAC Silver Crown entry list might feel they have a ‘home field’ advantage as the series comes to the Du Quoin State Fair.* There is reason for optimism among the Illini crowd. Nine different Illinois drivers account for 16 championship dirt car victories on the Magic Mile.* In fact, in the last ten years, five Ted Horn 100 races have been won by a driver with ties to the state of Illinois. Drivers from Illinois in 2017 include Shane (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum of Benton, Patrick Bruns of Champaign, Chris Windom of Canton, Terry Babb of Decatur, Patrick Lawson of Edwardsville, David Shain of Sullivan, Chris Urish of Elkhart, Shane Cottle of Kansas (now in Kokomo, IN), J.C. Bland, Korey Weyant and Joey Moughan, all of Springfield. Car owners with Illinois ties include Cornell Racing of the Chicago area (with driver Johnny Petrozelle), Bob Galas formerly of O’Fallon (with driver Brian Tyler), Patty Bateman of Murphysboro (with driver Casey Shuman) and Dennis McQuinn of Springfield (with driver Ken Schrader).* Several drivers and owners from Illinois stand a good chance of finding victory lane. Illinois has been well represented in Du Quoin victory lane since the first race in 1948.* Tony Bettenhausen of Tinley Park, a two-time national champion, won three consecutive races in 1949 and two in 1951.* Springfield, Illinois car owner Bessie Lee Paoli wasn’t allowed in the pit area but that didn’t stop her driver, Chuck Stevenson, from winning Du Quoin in 1952 on his way to a national championship.* Thirteen years later, Champaign’s Don “Grandpa” Branson stopped A.J. Foyt’s four race win streak on the Magic Mile. In 1976, Danville barber and central Illinois short track star Bubby Jones aced the field at Du Quoin before a CBS television audience.* In May of 1980, Gary Bettenhausen, chief mechanic Bob Galas and Joliet owner Tim Delrose started a streak of five consecutive Du Quoin wins going to Illinois drivers.* Meanwhile, Gary became the first winner’s son to pull into victory lane at Du Quoin. Gary, also from Tinley Park, won both races held in 1980 and again in 1982 and 1983.* Glen Ellyn’s Rich Vogler broke the Bettenhausen hold with his 1981 victory. *Gary won again in 1988 with Bob Galas turning the wrenches.* Galas and Delrose would win again in 1990 with Jeff Swindell. It would be nearly two decades before someone with Illinois ties won at Du Quoin again.* Shane Cottle established himself as a top modified and sprint car driver and moved to Indiana to be closer to the racing operation.* He still had family in Kansas, Illinois when he got a televised win in 2007.* Six years later, Elkhart’s Chris Urish scored one of the biggest upset wins in series history when he had just enough fuel to get to the checkers first.* Benton’s Shane (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum scored back-to-back popular wins in 2014 and 2015, while Canton’s Chris Windom is the defending “Horn 100” winner and the defending Silver Crown champion.
