    Spencer Hughes Becomes Youngest Southern All Star Winner

    RACE RECAP: COLUMBUS, MS--The Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series has been in existence for 34 years now and Saturday night at the 14th Annual Governors Cup sponsored by Cliburn Truck Lines history was made once again as 16 year old Spencer Hughes from Meridian, MS., became the youngest driver to win a Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series event taking the lead with four laps remaining from then leader Brian Rickman who was also looking to get his first series win. Hughes battled with Nick Thrash late in the race for the second and third spot, but on restart with four to go he got the run he needed and passed Rickman for the win. Rickman had his best run with the series coming home in second, Nick Thrash third from his 19th starting spot, Morgan Bagley of Gladenwater, TX., came home in the fourth spot after starting 16th and Chandler Petty of Haughton, LA., in his first run with the series came home fifth after he lead early in the race.

    Rick Rickman of Columbus, MS., finished in the sixth spot, Garret Albertson of Haughton, LA., seventh, T J Reaid of Acworth, GA., eight, Dane Dacus of Lakeland, TN., ninth and Hunter Rasdon of Jonesboro, AR., rounded out the top ten from his 17th starting spot.




    RACE TIDBITS: Pole sitter Chad Thrash fell out early with oil pump problems, David Breazeale winner at Thunderhill also dropped out early with mechanical problems, 6th starting Ray McElhenney was in the top five when his power steering let go, Southern All Star points leader Austin Horton finished 11th.

    Man, what a race it was too! Spencer Hughes is the real deal. For a long time now, I've been one of the guys that doubt "kids" in late model race cars, but he may be different. Maybe his talent level, calm demeanor, or his lower level experience, none the less, I think the top guys wouldnt have any worries lining up with him. You guys keep an eye on that black K3 come CP100 and fall classic time and you'll be impressed with him just as I was.

    Seen him run a few times at Whynot. if I remember right he won the Neismith street stock national championship at 15. Jumped in a crate late model an won first time in it.
