    Default Rods

Building a dirt late model sb2 engine and I'm looking at a set of eagle 6 inch h beam rods and just wandering if anyone has used these and if there up to the task. According to eagle there good for 8500 rpm and 1100hp so that seams well with in the limits. I'm looking at 800hp and 8000rpm. Thanks

Forget Eagle... that SB2 deserves (and needs) a better rod. Even a SCAT rod has a better reputation.

Are you set on a 6" rod? What pistons are you going to use?

Find a set of used Dyer's, Carillo, Crower or other US made rod. I have two sets of Austrian-built used NASCAR Pankl rods... you won't find a better product and they cost $125/set used.

Yes has to be 6 inch with my setup. NASCAR rods are designed for 1 race and the sizes are all off the wall. They take special cranks and pin sizes. That's why there so cheap.

Checkout RPM, or maybe molnar, the power an SB2 should make is going to be stressing even those pretty hard. Most guys running SB2 stuff probably have $1000 at the minimum in rods i would bet. The issue with eagle stuff is the sizing, you buy it and have to pay again to get it sized correctly. Most eagle builds are sub 600hp i would guess, you hear stories of guys pushing them to 1000hp but most don't end well.

Pro Power and alot of Engine builders sell used stuff, and have alot of options available. i would go that route, buy a used set of Dyers, or USA brand of some type. Get them, put new bolts in, high quality and go.

We have run a set of Lunati I Beams (Pro Mods) and crank, for going on 10 years, never a problem.

    Just say no...

I ordered a set of molnar extreme duty rods today along with there 4340 crank. I think they are more suited for the job. Thanks.

dont let size fool you , I have a set of K1 tech rods that weigh 400 grams and they have stood over 600hp for 3 years now and the journals are still round.....also the type of rod bolt used has a lot to do with it....

Most crank shops will grind the journals to Honda size and it doesn't cost any more to have your pistons made for the pin sizes. My next build will have those $2800.00 throw away Pankl rods in it.

My old friend Jim worked as a crank specialist in Roush's engine shop for eight years... he sez the rods they used in their engines should last 10 years in a weekly racers engine. I trust what he said...

you are like me krooser , we use what we have , i have a 302 ford block with a light weight crank that nascar banned years ago , it was a qualifying crank , no telling what it cost but we bought them for nothing at the old racers auction , but we cut counter weights down , ground the rod jrs to a 1.771 honda civic , some used chevy 350 pistons and that ole dog has held up for years ,

The OP will be happy with Tom Molnar's rods. One of the guys that owns a machine shop I use has a long relationship with him going back to his days at K1. He has had good luck with his stuff.

The problem I have with that off the shelf stuff is having anything customized to my application is nearly impossible. Molnar needs a 5 crank order to machine a crank to Honda specs or a SBC crank to a BBC snout... so you get what's in stock.

That's fine but it seems my stuff is never built from off the shelf parts. So I wind up buying good or not so good used pieces and rebuild to suit my needs.

I'm screwing a small block Mopar together right now and the 3.79 crank that's in it is a very nice older Mopar Performance billet crank...but the darn thing weighs 63#'s! I'd never buy a crank that heavy but it's what in that engine. For what that crank cost new I could add $500.00 and have Winberg grind a 50#'er for me.

he may be different now , but when tom first left carillo and went to K1 with his son , he had that set of H=beam honda rods made for me for 500 bucks , only new components in the short block , we tried a set of used eagles that were for a actual honda civic rod , but didnt realize the offset was different on a v8 rod than a 4 cyl rod , so i called tom and gave him the big and little end rod weights and he matched the new ones for me when they machined them. like i said , i haven't talked to him in a while so things may be different now....
