The Ultimate Battle of the Bluegrass Super Late Model Series kicked off their third season of competition over the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend on Saturday-Sunday, May 26-27th at Daugherty Speedway (IN) with the running of the (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) Potts Memorial. The $10,000 to win Feature was the highlight of the 2018 season opener that also featured the Ultimate Mid-Ohio Valley Super Late Model Series. After two days in northwest Indiana that saw scorching temperatures throughout the weekend, it would be Brandon Overton making the haul from Evans, GA worthwhile by picking up the five-figure payday.

“We’ve had some terrible luck, it feels good to finally win one. Maybe this will turn us around.” Smiled the 27-year-old regular with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series where he was the 2015 rookie of the year and currently sits eighth in their points. “I kind of figured it was the way to go around the bottom there on the first lap. I just wanted to get out front early and set a pace. This takes a whole team effort and the traffic was very good at showing the leaders respect throughout the race. This is a neat little place.” Added the driver of the #116 Mission Transport / Longhorn Chassis / Durham Engines machine.

2017 Eldora Speedway (OH) Track Champion, Kent Robinson and 2017 MARS Super Late Model Series Champion, Tanner English brought the field down to the green flag to begin the 50-lap feature. As the field entered the first corner, Overton, who started third, shot down to the bottom of the race track making it three-wide down the backstretch. By the time the field reached turn three, Overton had gotten by both Robinson and English to take the early race lead. Overton set the pace throughout the event as lapped traffic kept Overton a safe distance ahead of English and the rest of the pack.

As the laps continued to click off, Robinson, who fell back to third, regrouped and got back by English and set his sights on Overton. Robinson did close the gap, but not enough to mount a serious charge as Overton would go on to lead all 50 laps to take the checkered flag. For Overton, it was his second win of the year and first since a win at East Bay Raceway Park (FL) on February 7th in a Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series race. The win was also his second career Ultimate Super Late Model Series victory and first in the Ultimate Battle of the Bluegrass Super Late Model Series. His previous win came in the 2017 Aaron’s King of the Commonwealth, worth $20,000 at Virginia Motor Speedway (VA) back on April 8th, 2017.

Robinson settled for second ahead of English as Chad Stapleton, who started 14th, grabbed the fourth spot ahead of Jason Feger who completed the top five. Austin Burns, who started 15th worked his way up to a sixth place finish as Dustin Golden, Chad Gross, Shane Piatt and Jordan Schriner would wrap up the top 10. The previous day on Saturday, May 26th, Robinson collected the HRE Motorsports Challenge the Clocks Fast Qualifier award, worth $300 with a 14.483. He also scored a Heat Race win while English celebrated his 25th birthday with a win in the other Heat Race. Earlier on Sunday, May 27th, Chad Stapleton grabbed the win in the B Main.
