Jimmy Mars Shows Serious Speed in North/South 100; Eyes Red Cedar and Cedar Lake Specials

(MENOMONIE, WISCONSIN) Jimmy Mars and Mars Racing spent August 8-11 at the venerable Florence Speedway in Union, Kentucky, as the Cincinnati-area speedplant played host to a lucrative four-day stretch of racing action sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. In Wednesday's $12,000 to win 'Ralph Latham Memorial,' which was contested on a very rough racing surface, Jimmy ran fifth in his heat race prior to scratching from the remainder of the program due to the track conditions. On Thursday night in the 'North/South Shootout,' which boasted a $10,000 payday, Jimmy placed fourth in his heat race, won his B-Main, and later blitzed past eight competitors during the caution-free headliner to claim a steady twelfth place showing.

At Florence on Friday evening, a double set of heat races with combined passing points were held to set the lineups for Saturday's $50,000 to win 'North/South 100.' Jimmy won his first heat race of the night before streaking to third in his final prelim. After racking up the ninth most passing points in preliminary action, the Menomonie, Wisconsin star earned the rights to the inside of the fifth row for the start of Saturday's 100-lap crown jewel main event. Jimmy, who was inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame earlier in the afternoon, had moved up inside of the top five in the 'North/South 100' until a lap 59 incident sent him spinning and out of contention. The "Iceman" wound up retiring with damage in the twenty-second position. Full results can be obtained by clicking on www.lucasdirt.com.

“It was quite an honor to be inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame last Saturday with such a great class,” said Mars earlier this week. “It would have been great to have topped off the day with a top five run in the North/South 100, but that’s not how it played out unfortunately. We had a good car and I was just kind of biding my time hovering around that fifth spot until I got spun and then collected from behind. It’s a shame to have a wrecked car to work on this week at the shop instead of a top five finishing car, but we will get it all back together and go at it again.”

Another big weekend is in store for the #28 team from August 16-18 in their home state of Wisconsin. Things will kick off later tonight at the nearby Red Cedar Speedway in Menomonie, Wisconsin, as a $1,000 top prize is up for grabs in a weekly Late Model event. Tonight’s race will serve as a tune-up for the 2nd Annual ‘Mahder 55’ special at Red Cedar on Friday evening, as a $5,555 winner’s check will be on the line with the WISSOTA Challenge Series. Another WISSOTA Challenge Series program, which pays $2,500 to the victor, will then wrap up the tripleheader weekend on Saturday night at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wisconsin.
