CARTERSVILLE, GA – Evan Ellis of Plantersville, MS has clinched the 2018 Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series National Championship going into Week 25 competition of the 27-week season. Ellis ended Week 24 action with a best 14-week total of 699 points after a win at Columbus Speedway in Columbus, MS on Saturday night.

Late results from Week 24 competition at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, NE showed that the defending Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series National Champion Josh Leonard of Gibbon, NE came up short in his effort to catch Ellis for the title in the remaining three weeks of the season.

The best Leonard, and two other challengers, Sid Scarbrough of Florence, MS and Steve Russell of Pontotoc, MS, could do winning out in Week 25 Double Features, plus Week 26 and 27 races would be a best 14-week total of 698 points, one point short of Ellis’ current total. In 18 races, Ellis has 14 wins, 17 top five finishes and 18 top ten finishes.

So drivers soldier on in Week 25 action looking to see if they can make one of the Top 10 points fund paying positions. Week 25 will feature 14 races in seven different states that include Georgia, Kansas, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, and Florida.

There will be a dozen Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Division races, seven Durrence Layne Performance Parts Street Stock Division events, a pair of Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division races, and a lone Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division race.

The action begins on Friday night, as Oglethorpe Speedway Park in Savannah, GA will try to outrun Hurricane Florence with the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Division in competition. Salina Speedway in Salina, KS will also host the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Division on Friday night.

On Saturday night, Camden Speedway in Camden, TN will present all four Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series Divisions with action for the Late Models, the Street Stocks, the Late Model Sportsmen, and the only Modified Sportsman Division race of Week 25. Chatham Speedway in Chatham, LA and 81 Speedway in Wichita, KS will each host the Late Models on Saturday night.

Jackson Motor Speedway in Jackson, MS will have Double Features for both the Late Models and the Street Stocks this Saturday night. In each Division, the first feature will be a Week 18 Make-Up Race, and the second feature will be the regularly scheduled Week 25 race. The Late Model Sportsman Division will also be in action this Saturday night at Jackson Motor Speedway.

Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, NE will run a Week 8 Make-Up Feature on Saturday night. Duck River Raceway Park in Lewisburg, TN, Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS, and Hattiesburg Speedway in Hattiesburg, MS will each present the Late Models and Street Stocks on Saturday night.

Needmore Speedway in Norman Park, GA and Southern Raceway in Milton, FL will each present the Street Stocks in action on Saturday night. The lone Sunday night race for Week 25 will be at Junction Motor Speedway for the Late Models.

Ellis will be looking to net on a 49 in Week 25 Late Model action, which means he will need a 50-point win with a car count of eight or more to make his season a “perfect” one with 700 points represented by 14 weekly wins. Scarbrough and Russell are tied for second, and will both also be trying to net on a 49. Leonard has a best 14-week total of 687 points in the fourth spot, and he will be trying to net on a 46.
