Big Money Bringing Race Drivers from Around the United States and Canada to Screven
    By: Kelley Carlton

Sylvania, Georgia – It is an annual February pilgrimage for race drivers and fans alike from all around the United States. Georgia-Florida Speedweeks will see some of the nation’s best dirt racers competing for big money at Screven Motor Speedway February 7th through 9th. The speedway, which has been open for more than 20 years, is located between Sylvania and Newington on Savannah Highway. The event aptly named Winter Freeze again has the track hosting a pair of national touring series with the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Models and the Sport Compact Dirt Racing Association (SCDRA). Screven will also have a local racing in Street Stock V-8 and Crate Late Model filling out the schedule each night.

The World of Outlaws will be gunning for $10,000 to win on both Friday and Saturday nights while the SCDRA drivers will chase a record $14,000 payday. Drivers from multiple states and Canada are expected to enter the event. Screven Motor Speedway owner James “Redd” Griffin is excited about the 9th edition of his February classic. “This is our biggest race of the year by far. There is a lot of money up for grabs for all of the racers. And along with the money is a lot prestige as well.” For the World of Outlaws drivers, the Winter Freeze serves as their season opening events for a schedule of close to 50 events over their season. “These guys also race in a year long championship which pays the winner $100,000. So, getting off to a good start here is important to all of them.” Griffin added.

The SCDRA traveling series actually originated at and calls Screven it’s home track. More than 100 drivers are expected to try their luck at what is recognized as “the richest Sport Compact event in the World”. Pooler, Georgia’s Andrew Smith won the event a record 4 times in a row from 2014-2017 but in 2018 Portland, Ohio driver Dennis Adkins claimed the $13,000 prize. “We start 44 cars in that feature event and they race for 100 laps. We have some of the best drivers in the world here chasing that money. The race is always exciting and we are proud to host it.” concluded Griffin.

Thursday night will feature an open practice session. Racing begins Friday night with a full show for the World of Outlaws Late Models, Crate Late Models and Stock V-8s. The SCDRA cars will have practice sessions and their first round of time trials on Friday as well. Saturday will again see the same divisions competing in complete events along with the $14,000 SCDRA feature. A complete schedule of events as well as ticket prices can be found on Screven’s website www.screvenmotorsports.com For additional questions be sure to follow Screven on Facebook and Twitter. Looking forward to it. Screven's a get up on the wheel, multiple groove track that I found about ten years ago and have loved it ever since.
