Never got to see Tim Richmond race as I was just being born in his day but was one of my Dad's favorites. Would have loved to have seen him have a full career. Seems like he could jump in anything and be fast. Track also looked fun. Anyone know what came of the place?

I had the honor to watch Tim Richmond race in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500. He was Indy 500 Rookie of the Year before he went to drive a NASCAR stock car. Richmond was dam good and many like me liked him because he took no crap from ol' arnhead, on or off the track. Tim would probably have won a couple of Winston Cup Championships if he hadn't gotten sick.

Log Cabin Speedway was/is a 1/2 mile dirt track. Log Cabin was a state of the art dirt track for it's day but it wasn't in operation very long. It opened in 1981 and closed in 1985. From what I've read the place hosted some good sized events in it's short run. All who ever raced, or watched a race at Log Cabin indicate that was a very nice place for fans and competitors, alike.

Mother Nature has almost completely reclaimed it for her own, again.

Don't know the full story, but if he did what I think you are implying, it wasn't just dirty, it was criminal.

Can't argue, but let's not forget it was one of those women who gave it to him...unless he was making left and right turns off the racetrack???

Let this serve as a grave reminder to all you aspiring racecar drivers out there.

That surprisingly was a good read. He didn't know had HIV when he was banging all them girls so how you really blame him and they also made choice of non protected sex, not him alone. Top that off with all the white powder party favors and look out! Nobody was in right mind but he was awesome good. Sad note, Lakeville speedway went to auction some 10yrs ago maybe and amish bought it. The track unfortunately no longer with us

SS, the way I understand it is Tim wasn't aware he was infected with the HIV virus until he began showing AIDS symptoms. At that time doctors didn't automatically order tests for HIV infection. They may well have, for a period of time, treated Tim for common pneumonia without knowing the pneumonia was a result of being HIV positive. I'm fairly confident that Tim didn't infect anyone after it was discovered that he was HIV positive.

Tim contracted the HIV virus from someone. I reckon we could fault her for infecting Tim but it's unlikely anyone knows who she was and it's a safe bet that she didn't know she was carrying the virus, either. It was a frightful time. I personally know a guy that died of AIDS in the late 1980's and he was not yet 30 years old.

The timing for Tim was what turned out to be fatal. A few years later, like Magic Johnson, Tim would still be around due to AIDS drug c0cktails that are effective like they have been, and are, for Magic. It's just that the drug c0cktail needed for long term survival were yet to be developed and utilized at the time of Tim's infection.

Jim, actually it was Log Cabin Speedway. As of 2017 it still exists but it's nearly completely over grown at this point. Check the link I posted in post #2 and there are aerial and ground pictures taken in 2017 that show it to be intact but clearly it's too far gone to ever be resurrected.

There's also a neat ESPN 30 for 30 documentary on Tim that I've seen. There's a particular scene that gives you a good idea of how people looked at AIDS at the time.

His mother recounts how Tim cut his toe or something and he started bleeding. She went to clean it up or help him and he freaked out telling her to not dare touch his blood.

Like most new things the disease was very poorly understood at first and a lot of wrongful stigmas were placed on people that had it.

Read were just the other day its been announced where a 2nd person has actually been cured of AIDS/HIV.

Nope, power boy/GW. Magic is one of the lucky ones that respond to drug therapy. Johnson is not cured and most likely never will be. The virus is rendered dormant, or nearly dormant by the drug c0cktail therapy.

I dunno about underaged, but the trafficing part I believe is correct.

And honestly, if I am as rich as Mr Kraft, I’m getting a high end escort/escorts. Thousands a night, and not under surveillance because they are banging the powers to be. And not freakin being trafficed. And you can get whatever you want and they aren’t being forced to do it.

He’s a rich widowed guy, I don’t fault him at all for seeking out escorts. But the ones he seeked I do fault him for.

I read the book on Tim Richmond by David Poole. Very good. NASCAR screwed him over.

He was partier. He’d go to his boat in Miami, get hookers, some other stuff, and have a good time. And along the way it bit him. He wasn’t with girls according to the book after AIDS, at least without them knowing. And I flat out do not blame him one bit, be a heck of a ride.

He was an excellent wheelman, who came from money. His Dad I believe invented the boring machines for tunneling roads. Had a significant patent at least. Started at Lakeville, wanted to do Indy cars, but realized too much money involved to get there.

The movie Days of Thunder is loosely based on Tim. Was going to be autobiographical, but they stared veering to far away from the truth, so they canned that.

And yes, him and Dale butted heads. And if Tim woulda lived, I’d say he’d have a couple championships for sure.

I bet he’d have been a blast to party with, just keep your wife away.
