MARYVILLE, TN - Cory Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) of Loudon, TN won the Mountain Moonshine 40 for the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series on Saturday night at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN driving the Eagle Racing Engines Rocket. The two-time Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Champion swept the program leading all 40 laps from the pole.

Even though Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) led all 40 laps, he did get a spirited challenge for the lead at the halfway point of the race from Brandon Williams of Crossville, TN. Williams made up a half-straightaway disadvantage over ten laps to pull alongside Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) in lapped traffic on lap 22.

“I think the key to the win was setting fast time, earning the pole and getting the lead at the start of the race because running after the super late models, I felt it would be hard to pass,” Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) said. “Once I got into lapped traffic, I ratcheted it down a little, but when I saw Brandon showing me his nose, I had to ratchet it back up.”

Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) was able to put a couple of lapped cars between himself and Williams, and by lap 30 he had built back up a half-straightaway lead, and with five to go pulled out to a full-straightaway lead on the historic 4/10-mile clay oval.

Williams had to settle for second in the Jeff Woods Construction Special. Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, GA drove the Middle Georgia Roofing CVR to a third-place finish and was the Cruise With The Champions Rookie of the Race. Herrington came from the fifth starting spot to third, and then up to second on a restart to earn the VP Racing Lubricants Slick Move of the Race Award.

Drew Kennedy of Lansing, TN finished fourth in the Schubert Monument Sales Rocket, and fifth-place went to Cruz Skinner of Oxford, AL in the Skinner’s Body Shop Special. Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point leader Jake Knowles of Rome, GA was sixth in the Knowles Race Parts and Bodies Special.

Jesse Lowe of Crossville, TN took the seventh spot and the Fullmoon Graphics Lucky 7 Award driving the Xtreme Pressure Washing CVR. T.J. Brittain of Centre, AL drove the Brittain Hauling Warrior to an eighth-place finish, and VP Racing Fuels Young Guns Challenge Series driver 15-year-old Jake Rainey of Hiram, GA was ninth in the Wren’s Body Shop Special.

Eli Beets of Knoxville, TN rounded out the Top 10 in the TMC Transportation Special. Beets started 16th to earn the Knowles Race Parts and Bodies Hard Charger of the Race Award. In preliminary action, Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) was the Boyd Bilt Fabricators Fast Time Award Winner with a lap around Smoky Mountain Speedway in 18.286 seconds, and Knowles was the KRC Power Steering B-Main winner.

Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) took the lead from the pole position at the start of the 40-lap main event followed by Williams, Herrington, Jensen Ford of Piney Flats, TN, and Skinner. Ford and Skinner raced side-by-side for the fourth spot, but Ford slowed up in the Whitehead Construction TNT in turn three on lap five to bring out the first and only caution flag of the race.

Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) was the leader for the Dixie-Style Double-File Restart with the rest of the field doubled up behind him. Williams chose the outside for the restart, with the third-place car of Herrington lined-up to his left. Skinner, Kennedy, Brittain, Oakley Johns of Hohenwald, TN in the Johns Timber Special, Rainey, Knowles, and Beets lined up fourth through tenth respectively.

When the green flag came back out, Herrington took over the second spot from Williams. By lap seven, Williams came charging back on the inside to battle Herrington wheel-to-wheel for the second spot. Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) pulled away from the battle for second, and by the time Williams reclaimed second on lap ten, Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) had pulled out to a half-straightaway lead over Williams.

Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) reached the cars on the tail of the lead lap by lap 17, and by lap 19, Williams reeled in the leader and began to show Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) the nose of his race car in the corners on the inside. Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) was able to make the right moves at the right time to put two lapped cars between himself and Williams.

Williams found himself having a hard time getting through the lapped cars, and Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) was able to pull away. Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) had a half-straightaway lead over Williams by lap 30, and with five laps to go, had stretched it out to a full straightaway lead. When the checkered flag fell, Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) had a 3.037 margin of victory.
