ADAIRSVILLE, GA – It couldn’t be any closer in the battle for the 2019 Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division National Championship going into Week 21 of the 27-week Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series season. Luke Riddle of Hartselle, AL and the defending National Champion Oakley Gillespie of Five Points, TN are tied for the National point lead.

Riddle and Gillespie each have a best 14-week total of 689 points out of a possible 700. Riddle has nine wins, six which are 50-point wins, 19 top five finishes and 20 top ten finishes in 21 races. Gillespie has seven 50-point wins, 19 top five finishes and 21 top ten finishes in 21 races. If the season ended today, Gillespie would have the tie-breaker advantage over Riddle, seven 50-point wins to six 50-point wins.

Going into Week 21 Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division action, Riddle will try to net on a 47 and Gillespie will try to net on a 48. Netting is trying to replace the lowest of a driver’s best 14-week totals and replace it with a higher. In order to do so, Riddle would have to finish third or higher, and Gillespie would have to finish first or second.

Drivers racing in Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series events compete for both a Track point fund and a National point fund. Drivers compete against drivers racing at Durrence Layne Racing sanctioned tracks across the country using a National points system over a 27-week season that concludes on September 29.

A driver’s best 14 weekly point totals count as their season total. Once a driver reaches 14 weeks of competition, they start trying to net points by replacing the lowest weekly total among their best 14 weekly totals with a higher one. A driver can only count their best point finish each week as their total for that week.

The top ten drivers in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division National point standings will earn a seat at the Durrence Layne Racing Annual Awards Banquet to receive a point fund check and a trophy.

Chuckie Gipson of Tuscumbia, AL is third in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division standings with a best 14-week total of 631 points after one win, ten top five finishes and 15 top ten finishes in 15 races. Gipson will be trying to net on a 39 in his next race. David Nichols of Hodges, AL is fourth with a best 14-week total of 624 points.

Nichols has nine top five finishes and 15 top ten finishes in 17 races. Nichols will be trying to net on a 41. Darren Jewell of Russellville, AL rounds out the Top 5 of the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division standings with a best 14-week total of 615 points. Jewell has three top five finishes and 15 top ten finishes in 16 races. Jewell will try to net on a 41 in Week 21 action.

Seven of the top eight drivers in the Durrence Layne Modified Sportsman Division National standings have 14 weeks completed in their 2019 seasons. That means that 13 drivers in the Top 20 of the National standings still have one to five more weeks in the final seven weeks of the season to earn full points. That means there will be drivers coming out of nowhere and into the Top 5 in the coming weeks.

There will be four Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division races on the Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series Week 21 schedule. Camden Speedway in Camden, TN, North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, AL, Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL and Thunderhill Raceway in Summertown, TN will host Saturday night Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman events.
