ADAIRSVILLE, GA – Just two of four scheduled Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division Week 22 races were run on Saturday night, and the results of those races tightened up the National Championship battle to within one point. Just six of the Top 20 drivers in the point standings competed in Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series events.

The defending Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division National Champion Oakley Gillespie of Five Points, TN drove the Rounder’s Sports Bar and Grill Special to his eighth win of the 2019 Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series season on Saturday night at Thunderhill Raceway in Summertown, TN.

Gillespie was able to net on a 48 and close to within one point of National point leader Luke Riddle of Hartselle, AL. Gillespie and Riddle were set to do battle at North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, AL on Saturday night. Gillespie saw storm clouds rolling in, decided to load up and head for Thunderhill Raceway. Riddle stayed at North Alabama Speedway, and they rained out.

Even though he didn’t race, Riddle remains the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division point leader by one digit over Gillespie. Riddle has a best 14-week total of 692 points, and Gillespie is second with a best 14-week total of 691 points. One point also separates the third and fourth place drivers in the National standings.

Blake Cross of Centerville, TN is third in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division National standings with a best 14-week total of 635 points. Cross was unable to net any points after failing to start the main event on Saturday night at Thunderhill Raceway.

Chuckie Gipson of Tuscumbia, AL remains fourth in the standings with a best 14-week total of 634 points. Gipson did not compete in Week 22 Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series action. David Nichols of Hodges, AL also didn’t race in Week 22 competition, and remains fifth in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division National standings with a best 14-week total of 626 points.

In the other Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division main event on Saturday night, Brent Smith of Rutherford, TN drove the Finishline Auto Body Special to victory at Camden Speedway in Camden, TN. The other Saturday night Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division rainout was at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL.

Durrence Layne Racing officials have announced they are extending the Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series two weeks due to an excessive number of rainouts during the 27-week season that began the last weekend of March and was scheduled to end on September 29. Now, the season will run through October 13.

The deadline for tracks to run Double Features to make up any rainouts during the first 25 weeks of the 2019 Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series season will be extended one week to September 22, or by the end of Week 26.
