ADAIRSVILLE, GA – The Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division point leader Bryson Mitchell of Russellville, AL used two wins in Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series Week 23 competition to bring his season closer to a Perfect Season that has a best 14-week total of 700 points. Mitchell needs two more 50-point wins to pull it off.

The point leader drove the Sparks Energy Rocket to a Week 22 Make-Up Race win on Friday night at North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, AL to net on a 47, and Mitchell followed that up with the Week 23 Race win at NAS on Saturday night to net on a 48.

Mitchell has a best 14-week total of 697 points, and in the last six weeks of the season, he has to net on a 48 and a 49 to reach 700 points. Several drivers still have a mathematical chance to win the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division National Championship after Week 23 competition, but the coming weeks will bring the title hunt into better focus with Double Features/Make-Up Races coming into play.

Cruz Wallace of Tuscumbia, AL is second in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division National standings with a best 14-week total of 672 points. Wallace finished fifth on Saturday night at North Alabama Speedway to net on a 45.

Donovan Henry is third in the National standings with a best 14-week total of 669 points. Henry finished third in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division Week 22 Make-Up Race on Friday night at North Alabama Speedway to net on a 41. Henry finished eighth at NAS on Saturday night to net on a 41.

Blake Ray of Russellville, AL is fourth in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division National standings with a best 14-week total of 668 points. Ray finished sixth on Saturday night at North Alabama Speedway to net on a 44 and earn one point.

Doodle Lowe of Warrior, AL raced his way into the Top 5 of the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division National point standings in his last week to earn full points. Lowe went from 11th to fifth in the standings with a 50-point win on Saturday night at ECM Speedway in Arkadelphia, AL. Lowe now has a 14-week total of 666 points.

Drivers racing in Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series events compete for both a Track point fund and a National point fund. Drivers compete against drivers racing at Durrence Layne Racing sanctioned tracks across the country using a National points system over a 29-week season that concludes on October 13.

A driver’s best 14 weekly point totals count as their season total. Once a driver reaches 14 weeks of competition, they start trying to net points by replacing the lowest weekly total among their best 14 weekly totals with a higher one. A driver can only count their best point total each week as their total for that week.

The top ten drivers in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division National point standings will earn a seat at the Durrence Layne Racing Annual Awards Banquet to receive a point fund check and a trophy.

In other Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division Week 23 action, Trey Rickman of Columbus, MS drove the Rickman Brothers Trucking Special to victory on Saturday night at Jackson Motor Speedway. Tyler Burgess of Olive Branch, MS topped a 35-car field on Sunday night at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS driving the Burgess Outdoor Power Rocket.

Colton Leyendecker of Holt, FL drove the CJL Construction Special to victory on Sunday night in the Week 11 Make-Up Race at Southern Raceway in Milton, FL. Ryan King of Anniston, AL won the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman race on Saturday night at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL driving the David King Automotive Special.

King’s engine was protested and impounded until Durrence Layne Racing Technical Director Thomas McReynolds could inspect it on Tuesday. McReynolds found the engine to be legal, and King was officially declared the winner. King could be a driver to watch in the coming weeks, as he is 13th in the National points with 627 points, and he has one more week to earn full points.
