ADAIRSVILLE, GA – The 2019 Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division National Championship has come down to two drivers and two weeks of competition. Luke Riddle of Hartselle, AL is the point leader with a three point advantage over the defending National Champion Oakley Gillespie of Five Points, TN.

Going into Week 28 of the 29-week season this Saturday, a 50-point win by Riddle clinches the Championship. A loss by Gillespie in Week 28 action also clinches the title for Riddle. Riddle has a best 14-week total of 697 points, and he will be trying to net on a 49. Gillespie has a best 14-week total of 694 points, and he will be trying to net on a 48.

A Week 28 win by Gillespie and a non-win by Riddle takes the title hunt into the 29th and final week of the 2019 Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division season. Week 29 could also present another set of title scenarios that would involve tie-breakers. So we go to Week 28 competition and see what the end of Saturday night racing brings.

Here is the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division Week 28 schedule of events for this Saturday night. Races are scheduled for Camden Speedway in Camden, TN, North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, AL, and Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL. North Alabama Speedway will have qualifying and heat races on Friday night for their Saturday night race.

Behind Riddle and Gillespie there are eight other points fund paying spots to be contested over the next two weeks. Chuckie Gipson of Tuscumbia, AL is third in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division National standings with a best 14-week total of 667 points. Gipson will be trying to net on a 46 in Week 28 action.

Tracy Terrell of Russellville, AL and Seth Johnston of Santa Fe, TN are tied for the fourth spot in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division National standings. Each driver has a best 14-week total of 659 points. Terrell and Johnston will both be trying to net on a 44.

Brent Smith of Rutherford, TN won the only Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division Week 27 race on Saturday night at Camden Speedway driving the Finishline Auto Body Special for his fifth win of the season.

Drivers racing in Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series events compete for both a Track point fund and a National point fund. Drivers compete against drivers racing at Durrence Layne Racing sanctioned tracks across the country using a National points system over a 29-week season that concludes on October 13.

A driver’s best 14 weekly point totals count as their season total. Once a driver reaches 14 weeks of competition, they start trying to net points by replacing the lowest weekly total among their best 14 weekly totals with a higher one. A driver can only count their best point total each week as their total for that week.

The top ten drivers in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division National point standings will earn a seat at the Durrence Layne Racing Annual Awards Banquet to receive a point fund check and a trophy.
