COCHRAN, GA – Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, GA doubled down Sunday night with his second straight $5,000 at Cochran Motor Speedway driving the Poole Service Center Rocket to the win in the 50-lap Cochran Clash, the Newsome Raceway Parts Winter Shootout Series finale for the Crate Racin’ USA Dirt Late Model Series.

While Herrington won the battle, Pierce McCarter of Gatlinburg, TN won the seven-race battle and was crowned the 2020 Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racin’ USA Winter Shootout Series Champion driving the Parkway Liquor Store Longhorn after a close contest with Cruz Skinner of Oxford, AL.

Herrington picked up his first $5,000 win on Saturday after winning the 4th Annual Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racin’ USA Street Stock World Championship Race at his hometown track. Herrington started his racing career in the lower Divisions at Cochran Motor Speedway and worked his way up into the Late Model Division.

Herrington started on the pole position and camped out on the high side cushion to led every lap and hold off Kyle Bronson of Brandon, FL and Mark Whitener of Middleburg, FL, two competitors that led a feeling of urgency in Herrington’s mind before the race even began.

“This is unreal,” Herrington said as he climbed out of his car powered by an economical Chevrolet Performance 604 Engine right out the crate with factory installed sealing bolts. “I knew we had a good shot to win and we’ve had a tremendous amount of good luck with this car. We showed speed right off the bat.

“Right before the race, I started looking around and there was Bronson and Whitener starting right behind me, and they’re good everywhere they go,” Herrington said. “I wanted to get out front and see what we had. I was really concerned on restarts because I know Bronson and Whitener are really good at throwing sliders, but it all worked out in our favor.”

On each of the Dixie-Style Double-File Restarts, Herrington’s prognostication of Bronson and Whitener throwing slide jobs came true, but the sliders were not on Herrington, but on each other while they battled most of the race for the second spot. While Bronson and Herrington battled with each other throwing the momentum burning sliders, Herrington was able to keep up his speed and pull away in the lead.

McCarter finished 14th and won the Newsome Raceway Parts Winter Shootout Series Championship by four points over Skinner, who ended up right behind him in 15th driving the Skinner’s Body Shop Capital.

“We weren’t really planning on running for the Championship, but we had a good run at the Ice Bowl, so we went to Volusia and left there leading the points,” McCarter said. “Cruz and I were close all of the way, and we ended up that way again tonight. I would pass him, and then we would pass me back. He had a flat late in the race, but he came back and was right behind me at the end of the race.”

Bronson finished second in the Cochran Clash driving the Brandon Collision Rocket, and Michael Brown of Lancaster, SC took the third spot in the WP Racing Shocks Longhorn. Dylan Knowles of Lanett, AL was fourth in the K-Line Logistics Rocket, and Whitener ended up fifth in the ULC Motorsports Barry Wright.

Joseph Brown of Columbus, MS drove the Lewis Auto Sales Rocket to a sixth-place finish and Carson Ferguson of Maiden, NC finished seventh in the Hoopaugh Grading Rocket. Logan Roberson of Waynesboro, VA took the eighth position in the EZ Go Rocket, and two-time Newsome Raceway Parts Winter Shootout Champion Jimmy Elliott of Cleveland, TN was ninth in the Car Smart Auto Sales Longhorn.

Jeremy Shaw of Millport, AL rounded out the top ten in the Bud Coley Trucking Barry Wright. Jordy Nipper of Gray, GA started 24th in the Scotty’s Muffler Rocket and finished 12th to earn the Knowles Race Parts and Bodies Hard Charger of the Race Award.

Herrington made it a clean sweep of the race by setting Fast Time honors in Group Qualifying with a lap around Cochran Motor Speedway in 15.482 seconds. He then earned the pole position for the Big Show with a won in his ten-lap KRC Power Steering Heat Race, and then led all 50 laps of the Main Event.

The other two KRC Power Steering Heat Races were won by Knowles and Bronson, and Cody Overton of Evans, GA won the 12-lap KRC Power Steering B-Main Race in the Mid States Equipment Rocket.
