    Default We don't race dynos

one thing we as tuners, must be reminded of is that "we don't race dynos"
it is so easy to get excited about an increase of any value when examining dyno numbers but many times it does not transfer to the race track.
We have recently made efforts to simulate some on track conditions while doing air cleaner testing.

here is a link explaining an older test procedure that is normal dyno room conditions and then more recently with some updated procedures that have us motivated to make more adjustments to testing and dyno room set up.

Brad, first gonna say I didn't read that test scenario all that close. I would ask if you had something to simulate a hood and scoop on the dyno when blowing air across it? or a cold air box? Not an aero engineer but I don't think the way the test was done (again assuming things on my own like no hood, etc) is any more valid/accurate then not blowing air across the cleaner assembly. Maybe with the hood it comes out the same but unless it was closer to real world conditions. . . . Shrugs

    I should also ask this:

No idea on how the dyno room your using is built, but I also assuming that since you where blowing air across the air cleaner that the carb wasn't attached to a fresh air source. Now completely possible to have adequate air volume/movement inside the dyno cell, but I know on mine before I got a bigger air fan the temps inside the dyno room could easily raise 20/30 degree's inside the room during a pull without the carb hooked to a fresh air system to the outside.

Back to the hood/scoop deal, not sure if you have a hub dyno close to you or access to one but that might be the easiest way to get closer to real world test (complete body and air flow under hood area from fan). Problem with the hub dyno's is no one makes (that I found) a wide 5 to standard pattern hubs on the dyno's. Not a fan of the roller dyno's as you have too much slip and problems putting a LM on them. I do have a set of adapters to install a LM on a hub dyno (I made them) so if you need a set to borrow let me know.

Not picking on you or your testing methods, just clarifying info and variables for myself

I do not feel as though you are picking on or criticizing at all
those are valid points and I am happy to share our procedures and thought process along with our ideas for future testing

our page did stipulate that early testing was using completely static air as is typical for dyno room tests.
more recent testing was performed with higher speed air directed at the air cleaner
Let me explain the reason for the test---
We commonly need to remind competitors to deflect the moving air that may connect itself to the air filter.
We commonly see air cleaners perched above the defector on the hood
Many people believe the deflector is to keep dirt from clogging the air filter and although that is true to a point there is much more to it than that.--
Also another common area that needs addressed is the right side of the air cleaner---
when the car enters the corner at a high rate of speed and slides sideways the air speed moving across the air cleaner can and will syphon the fuel right out of the carburetor.
We learned this several years ago as the MD3 noses evolved and at one point we had numerous drivers with fuel all over their shield at the end of a race.

Our recent testing efforts are to establish data with dynamic air with different air cleaner systems

    about our dyno cell:
for traditional break-in and tuning we have air ducted to the carburetor from a controlled source---for more accuracy our computer controlled weather station is mounted in that air duct
The actual air in the room is changed a ridiculous amount of times per second (not sure how many it was designed by the dyno pros)

During the dynamic air cleaner testing our carb supply air was attached to the intake side of the high speed air mover

Now for the hood that you mentioned
We have a hood coming with several different deflectors and a couple variations of a nose piece
this is what we discussed with Ben walker immediately after this initial test session as a way to further our results
It's going to get tight in the dyno cell as it is 12X12 but the smaller size is what we originally chose in order to control room atmosphere better

We hope to do the more extensive tests in the next month or so----right now we are full throttle with new engines and rebuild projects and I'm sure you know how much time and energy can go into this type of testing

I was hoping for some comment suggestions here
we are gearing up for another test session with the air cleaner systems and look forward to test procedure ideas from our associates---please explain your thought process but we are certainly up for adjustments in procedure
I can tell you this --we have scrapped 23 different versions of what we currently promote because it didn't stack up.
We are now in the fine tune stage of this and continue to try different designs
