    Very good information.

My Dad always had a paper filter with a screen for all our fueling at home for tractors and go karts etc. Thank God looking back.

The question must now be asked,,,,,, Why are children allowed in these work areas in the first place?

it is what it is, a horrible accident, there is nothing wrong with kids in the pits as long as there is an adult with them, everyone always looks for blame, unfortunately accidents happen, and its really bad when its children, you could get in a car accident with a child with you and it be horrible, i see nothing wrong with the kids being there and learning, having fun with there family, after all thats what family is all about, being together

it happened behind the hauler. Ricks Daughter and her son were visiting them like a lot of families do. when Grandpas racing, they are usually in the hauler... just a freak accident while he was coming out of the hauler doors

i agree with GRT , there is nothing wrong with bringing the kids , but an adult HAS to be responsible...now one thing i dont like is seeing a 6 month old , like the one sitting down from me last night with no ear protection on nor anything shielding the baby from the dust , may be its just me , but i never took either of mine that young.....

They use grounding cables when fueling airplanes. Would this not help with static electricity on race cars as well?

I believe Mark says in the post that it wouldn't help.

Gotcha. I agree with mark. I see no reason for filters when car has a good one if necessary

One of the tracks we run on once or twice a year has a rule about grounding the fuel cells but we've never been given any info on how to do it. We run a ground strap from the fuel cell mounting straps to the frame but, as Mark Richards stated, with the typical "plastic" cells I've never been very confident that it does any good. I'd feel about as safe with the old ground dragging straps that were common on the semis back in the old days.

Never been burned in over 60 years racing but been on fire from accidents a couple of times and my son been through one fire without any injury. Don't want to do it again, especially just from fueling the car, and we're going to do some serious research on this problem. Hope others do so too and share what they come up with.

Just because it hasn't happened to you don't assume that ignorance is bliss.

With aircraft you run a ground wire from fuel truck to aircraft. Great point with a race car. Where could you run a wire to/from?

How about when the whole fuel cell comes right out from under the car...

I think people forget that the pits can be a dangerous place at times. I would be okay with anyone under 14 years to not be allowed in the pits .

We were pitted across pit road from him. My God that was nasty. Prayers for that little boy.

I had a good friend who was watching his grand kid at his home back in 2005... Got into his stuff & set himself on fire .... ... My buddy was sleeping on the couch .... Likely had a few beers ... The boy went though years of skin graphs / wearing a mask .... Just a bad deal all the way around ...

I feel bad for the guy. Don't know the extent of the damage but to be basically minding your own business and you get a fuel cell in your face and it ignites and now burns your car. That's like burning stacks of $100 bills
