This year’s Buchanan County Fair will kick off with the inaugural Buchanan County Fair Late Model Showdown presented by Peoples Company and local Land Agent Travis Smock. The race will take place on Tuesday, July 6 at the Independence Motor Speedway. The event will include IMCA Modified and Stock Car races with the highlight being the $7,200-to-win Denny Osborn Memorial Late Model race. More than $30,000 in total prize money will be up for grabs.
The IMCA Stock Cars will run for a $750 top prize while the IMCA Modifieds will be vying for a $1,000 winner’s check. With the recent passing of Hall of Fame Late Model racer Denny Osborn, local businessman Todd Summers approached Smock about hosting an event in his honor. Summers has rounded up numerous sponsors to award the $7,200 top prize for the main event. Late Models will run “72” laps with 12 lap heat races and a 60 lap feature event.
Denny Osborn was a longtime supporter of local tracks through his business Waterloo Auto Parts and famously raced the #72 Dirt Late Model for over 30 years. He was the 1989 IMCA National Points Champion, won multiple championships at numerous tracks, and was inducted into the Independence Motor Speedway, Hawkeye Downs and Hamilton County Speedway Hall of Fames.
Late Models will run under “Indee Open” type rules. Modifieds and Stock Cars will be IMCA sanctioned, and these classes will count towards IMCA State and National points. The Modified and Stock Car winners will also qualify for the IMCA Fast Shafts All Star Invitational. Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. with hot laps beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the first race will begin at 7:00 p.m.
