Two-time Bettenhausen Winner Swanson Returns to Springfield Saturday
Illinois State Fair Race Weekend Ready To Go Green

    By Jay Hardin
    Track Enterprises Staff

Springfield, IL (August 15, 2021)-Five-time USAC Racing Silver Crown champion Kody Swanson had a plan to limit his Silver Crown events to just the pavement events coming in to 2021. Limiting time in the big cars would allow Swanson to pursue other forms of the sport including stock cars and road racing. However, Swanson won twice on the pavement at Lucas Oil Raceway Park and finished second at Winchester. Swanson’s pavement finishes, combined with the loss of two dirt events from the schedule, put him atop the 2021 standings.

A call from Chris Dyson altered Swanson’s 2021 plans. A chance at topflight equipment on dirt was too much to pass up and Swanson ran the Dyson car to 6th at Selinsgrove and has a 1-point lead in the standings prior to the August 14 event at Lucas Oil Raceway Park. Swanson also let on that the dirt ride with Dyson was not a one race deal, the two plan on teaming up for an assault on the August 21 Bettenhausen 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Not only will the Californian be looking for a third Bettenhausen win he would be in the running for an unprecedented sixth Silver Crown Series title.

Dyson crew chief Sean Michael ran a second car for two races in 2020 with Michael listed as the entrant. Michael teamed with Kyle Larson and the two were unbeatable in the races they entered. Larson won the Hoosier Hundred and then dominated the Bettenhausen 100 leading 90 of the 100 miles. Swanson stands a good chance of becoming a three-time winner at Springfield with Michael preparing Dyson’s car.

The new Doran Enterprises team entered its first ever Silver Crown event at LORP in May with Swanson moving from his 2020 Nolen ride to Doran. The combination clicked immediately as Kody set second quick time and took the lead from Bobby Santos on lap 65 on the way to his 31st Silver Crown series win. The Doran/Swanson combination set a new track record at Winchester in late July and the driver battled with defending Silver Crown national champion Justin Grant losing to Grant by just a few feet at the finish. Just yesterday Swanson won a $50,000 bonus capturing the Silver Crown portion of the Hoosier Classic.

Only fourteen drivers have more than one championship race win in the 86-year history of national championship racing at the Illinois State Fair. Kody Swanson is one of the fourteen as are Tony Bettenhausen, Gary Bettenhausen, A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, Jack Hewitt and Chuck Gurney. Swanson’s first race on the Springfield Mile came in 2008 when he finished 4th. He led all 100 miles in his 6th start for his first win in 2014 and led 43 after coming from the 16th spot for win number two in 2015. Swanson is 12th on the all-time money won list in Springfield Silver Crown races.

Saturday, August 21 marks the 50th anniversary of the first Silver Crown Series race at the Illinois State Fairgrounds and coincides with the 50th anniversary of the series itself. Practice for the big cars begins at 10 a.m. with Fatheadz Eyewear Qualifying at 11:30. The Bettenhausen 100 is scheduled to push off at approximately 2 p.m. Tickets are available by calling Track Enterprises at 217-764-3200 or at the Illinois State Fair Box Office.

The event is all part of a huge racing weekend in Central Illinois featuring Lincoln Speedway with MOWA Sprint Cars on Friday night, Silver Crown Saturday at the Springfield Mile, Jack Hewitt Night featuring POWRi Midgets at Macon Speedway Saturday night, and the ARCA Menards Series Sunday afternoon at the Springfield Mile.

Grant Seeks Second Bettenhausen Win, Second Championship
Springfield USAC Event To Take Green Saturday Afternoon

    By Jay Hardin
    Track Enterprises Staff

Springfield IL-(August 16, 2021)-Ione, California’s Justin Grant reached a milestone in 2017 claiming his first 100-mile championship win at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Grant reached a second milestone when he captured his first USAC Silver Crown title in 2020. The USAC star is looking to repeat both milestones in 2021, winning the Saturday August 21 Bettenhausen 100 at Springfield would make Grant a two-time Springfield winner and go a long way to assisting him in his quest for a second national championship.

Long recognized as one of the stars of the USAC Sprint Car Series Grant’s natural progression was to the bigger cars landing one part-time deal in 2012 with legendary championship owner/chief mechanic Bob Hampshire. The combination had limited success with Grant finishing 13th at the Hoosier Hundred and missing the Bettenhausen 100 at Springfield. The next season Grant secured a ride with Marc Longworth for the Hoosier Hundred and went from 18th to 6th, however rides for the other two miles failed to materialize.

Grant’s big break appeared in 2015 when he teamed with owner Chris Carli. A fifth in the Hoosier Hundred was followed by a pole at Springfield and a fourth at Du Quoin. Grant appeared on the cusp of breaking through for that elusive 1-mile dirt track win. The 2016 season saw the team make just 2 starts on the dirt miles, mechanical issues forced Grant out of the Hoosier Hundred and he ended up nineteenth at Du Quoin.

Grant got an even bigger break in 2017 as 1996 Indianapolis winning car owner Ron Hemelgarn joined forces with Carli. While the Hoosier Hundred was lost to rain the combination worked at Springfield starting on the outside of the front row and leading 79 of 100 miles to claim his first Silver Crown Series win as well as his first Bettenhausen 100. Grant won at Terre Haute Action Track in 2018 for his second series win again with Hemelgarn.

In the pandemic plagued 2020 season Grant had top finishes but no victories and joined legends such as Jimmy Caruthers and Billy Cassella as drivers who won the Silver Crown championship without the benefit of a win during the championship season. Grant has been a consistent performer in 2021 and pulled off his first pavement win in the big cars narrowly beating Kody Swanson to the line in the Vogler Classic at Winchester. However, an 18th place finish at Lucas Oil Raceway in the Hoosier Classic dropped him to third in the current standings.

Grant edged Kyle Larson for his second pole at Springfield last year and led the opening ten circuits. A win at Springfield would close the points gap to leader Kody Swanson with just three races remaining after the USAC Siver Crown 59th Bettenhausen 100 at Springfield.

Saturday marks the 50th anniversary of the first Silver Crown Series race at the Illinois State Fairgrounds and coincides with the 50th anniversary of the series itself.

The event is all part of a huge racing weekend in Central Illinois featuring Lincoln Speedway with MOWA Midwest Open Wheel Association Sprint Cars on Friday night, Silver Crown Saturday at the Springfield Mile, Jack Hewitt Night featuring POWRi Midgets at Macon Speedway Saturday night, and the ARCA Menards Series Sunday afternoon at the Springfield Mile.

SCHRADER RETURNS TO USAC SILVER CROWN RACING SATURDAY AT SPRINGFIELD

By Jay Hardin – Track Enterprises Staff

Springfield, IL (August 18, 2021)………The excitement of the return of the Illinois State Fairgrounds and the annual weekend of auto racing was enhanced when it was announced that 1982 USAC Silver Crown champion, NASCAR star and fan favorite Ken Schrader would return to pilot one of the big cars in the annual Bettenhausen 100 championship race this Saturday, August 21, on the Springfield Mile.

Schrader returns to Springfield on Saturday aboard the Mark Swanson Encore Team/Rosewood Machine & Tool – Jet Star/Maxim/Moyle Toyota No. 21.* The car was most recently driven at Springfield last October by David Gravel, who charged from 26th to 2nd in his series debut.* Kody Swanson drove the car to a 3rd place finish at Eldora Speedway this past June.

Jeff Swindell piloted the Swanson ride to a 3rd at Springfield in 2017 and also recorded a 2nd, 3rd and 4th at Du Quoin.

Schrader has won events on the Springfield Mile in virtually every type of race car imaginable, save one, the 96-inch wheelbase beasts whose lineage goes back to the very first days of auto racing.

One of the most well-known and versatile drivers in American auto racing, Schrader has raced for well over 40 years.* He continues to travel to short tracks across the United States competing against local and national heroes while still taking time to sign autographs or pose for pictures with his legions of fans.* Winning, versatility, and an engaging personality have made him one of the most popular racing drivers in the country.

His foray into big-time auto racing began with his USAC Stock Car debut in 1979.* A year later, Ken secured a ride in the last event of the 1980 USAC Silver Crown Series as a teammate to Gary Bettenhausen on the powerful Delrose-Holt team.* He immediately set the car on the pole for the 1980 MAB Paints 100 at Terre Haute, his first start in one of the big cars.* Ken got a big break in 1981 when Southern Indiana car owner Damon G. “Blackie” Fortune hired Schrader to drive his Silver Crown machine.

Schrader’s Rose Brothers sponsored Beck chassis didn’t win a race in 1982 though he came close to winning the 100-mile dream event at Springfield in May of 1982.* Top finishes made him a contender for the 1982 title, but the car had a problem at the season finale at Nazareth.* Fellow driver Sheldon Kinser surrendered his Ben Leyba ride to Schrader, allowing Ken to make the race and win the crown.* It was that gesture that caused Ken and his wife to name their son Sheldon.

Schrader has six starts in Silver Crown cars at Springfield with three top-10 finishes.* His last start came for owner George Middleton in 1985.* While he made an attempt for Dennis McQuinn in 2018, should Ken make the field Saturday it will be a record 36 years between championship starts at Springfield.* What else has Ken Schrader done on the Springfield Mile?* Well, he won the 1998 Allen Crowe 100 ARCA race, won the 1983 Rex Easton Memorial USAC Midget race and won the June 1998 Modified event.

August 21 marks the 50th anniversary of the first Silver Crown Series race at the Illinois State Fairgrounds and the 87th anniversary of the first national championship race at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.* Practice for the big cars begins at 10 a.m. Central with Fatheadz Eyewear Qualifying at 11:30.* The Bettenhausen 100 is scheduled to push off at approximately 2 p.m.* Tickets are available by calling Track Enterprises at 217-764-3200 or at the Illinois State Fair Box Office.

The 59th Bettenhausen 100 is another chapter in this rich, storied tradition of Champ Car and 1 mile dirt track racing in the United States.

This is one of the most coveted prizes in Silver Crown racing, as winning this puts you among the names of former Indy 500 winners and racing champions of all disciplines such as Billy Winn, Wilbur Shaw, Mauri Rose, Sam Hanks, Roger Ward, Jimmy Bryan, Jim Hurtubise, A.J. Foyt, Don Branson, Al Unser, Mario Andretti, Roger McCluskey, Tom Bigelow, Gary Bettenhausen, Dave Darland, Kenny Irwin, Jimmy Sills, Larry Rice, Chuck Gurney, J.J. The 28th Annual Illinois Sportsman Nationals will also begin their racing weekend with practice and heat races to set the line up for their championship event on Sunday afternoon before the ARCA race.

And a rare daily double can be done with a former 4 time Bettenhausen 100 winner Jack Hewitt being the grand marshall at Macon for the Camfield Memorial later tonight at Macon Speedway.

Today is a fun day! Come on out to the fair, grab a corndog, pork burger, maybe a funnel cake, lemon shake up, or something else as the fair has a bit of everything, and come on out for traditional Champ Car racing at it's best! You never know who you may see win here who will go on to be a star at even another level as USAC has produced many throughout the years. Be a witness to hight speed history! Kody Swanson wins the rain shortened Bettenhausen Memorial 100. Race was deemed complete after 76 of the 100 miles. Great race throughout the 75 miles. Wish it could have went the full 100 miles! Seaver and Shane C0ckrum might have had something for Kody.
