Al Unser was the last true National Driving Champion. Al won the National Championship in 1970. '70 was the last year that the 1 mile dirt tracks at places like Springfield, IL, Du Quoin, IL and the Indiana State Fairgrounds Mile were on what was then known as the Championship Trail. To be National Champion the drivers had to race both the conventional front engine cars on the 1 mile dirt tracks as well as the rear engine cars on the asphalt tracks. In 1971 they separated the dirt cars from the asphalt rear engine cars. Beginning in 1971 the asphalt rear engine car series was known as the USAC Gold Crown Series and the championship dirt cars were known as the USAC Silver Crown series as they are to this day.
RIP Mr. Unser. Thoughts and prayer to the family & friends of Mr. Al Unser.
