Default Charleston (IL) Summer Nationals Event Canceled.

    Charleston Summer Nationals Event Canceled

June 28, 2022 (LaSalle, IL) – Due to unfortunate circumstances we will be canceling the July 5th Summer Nationals race at Charleston Speedway. Due to the health concerns and health complications of race promoter and President of Sixteens Race Promotions Tony Izzo Jr. The event was slated to be the return of the Hell Tour to the Charleston Speedway, Super Late Models have been absent from the track in over five years. The event was also slated to be a race in honor of the Graves Family and their contributions to the track over the decades. Last week, Tony was tested and evaluated for stroke like symptoms. The good news is it wasn’t a stroke however he has what they call Bell’s Palsy, which means he has lost all functions of one side of his face. The left side of his face is in a paralyzed state. Recovery is expected but doctors have said it can be up to several months before he is 100 pct recovered. Tony is currently taking medications and doing therapy in hopes to speed up the recovery time. With the cancellation of the event a make-up date for the Graves 40 race is being looked at. The ideal date would accommodate the event to return to the Mars Racing Series schedule. We also want to find a date that makes sense for the best turnout of fans and race teams. Tyson Graves, with Mars Racing Series commented, “It’s been a challenge to get this race in to honor my family. I will do everything I can to make this race a success and an event for years to come. I am thankful to those who have given and shown support of this event. We will make this event happen as soon as we can.”

Tony wants to thank everyone for their understanding during this time. Sixteens Race Promotions would like to thank Sonny Ross for being so helpful and understanding in this situation. Hopes of a Summer Nationals return to the Charleston Speedway will be looked at for 2023.

I’m sure they’ve checked but if they have it, please have someone get a message to him to have a CT scan or some sort of brain scan to make sure nothing bad is going on up there.

We had a very young family member start to lose functionality on one side of her face at a young age and the doctors all said that it wasn’t a stroke and that it was Bell’s palsy. Turns out after the steroids didn’t cure the palsy aspect of it they went back in to reassess and she ended up having a brain tumor that messed her up for a good long while. She survived it, but had we just gone with what the doctor said about Bell’s palsy she wouldn’t of. Good luck to Tony and his family.

She was 13 at the time it was discovered…..we kept noticing a small droop on one side of her face when she would smile and we took her to get checked out. We thought stroke at first which would have been very uncommon, and had never even heard of Bell’s palsy until the neurologist first diagnosed it as that.

He basically told us the medication they would give her would fix the Bell’s palsy issue and she would be good after 30 days or so…..when that didn’t happen we went to a different city in our state and got a second opinion thank goodness.

She still has some quirky twitches every now and again when she gets nervous and lost a good bit of her hearing on the side the tumor was on , but other than that she recovered fully and benefited from some of the research done by the Buoniconti fund led Miami project to cure paralysis to help her regain movement in her face…..it was a 2 year process and multiple surgeries but the surgeons were amazing and for what it was she couldn’t have been in better hands

Anytime I hear a Bell’s palsy diagnosis I always share the story just in case….Good luck to Mr. Izzo and his family.

Does the COVID-19 vaccine cause Bell’s palsy?

Throughout the Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech clinical trials, eight cases of Bell’s palsy — a type of rare, sudden muscle weakness in the face — were reported in total. Four of the cases were in the Pfizer vaccine group, three in the Moderna vaccine group, and one in the Moderna placebo group. The rate of Bell’s palsy incidence in the vaccine clinical trials was less than or equal to the rate of developing the condition in general. While there’s no evidence the cases were caused by the vaccine, they are considered an adverse event and will continue to be reported and monitored as a special interest adverse effect.
