SPRING CITY, TN – Lamar Hughes of Soddy Daisy, TN drove the Hughes Farms Camaro to a $1,000 victory in the wee hours of Sunday morning in the Paul Murphy Memorial Race Presented by Hawk Performance at Mountain View Raceway. Mother Nature tried to wash out the race with a heavy drenching from a thunderstorm, but racing resumed after a four-hour delay.

The rains came after Hot Laps had been complete, so the track was sealed off and the water on the track drained down the high banks and into the infield drains. In the meantime, other tracks within a 100-mile radius got rained out by the line of heavy storms, and competitors from those tracks hurried to Mountain View Raceway to swell the pit are with additional race cars.

By the time the new cars and an additional Divisions were added to the racing program, there were 143 cars in eight Division on hand at Mountain View Raceway with drivers representing five different states.

A patient crowd had to leave the Grandstand and seek shelter in their cars in the parking lot during the rain delay due to heavy cloud to ground lighting in the area. They returned to their seats after the storms cleared the area and stuck around for the racing program that got back underway at 12:30 a.m. and was completed at 4:40 a.m. on Sunday morning.

During the caution period, Eric Hughes went to pit area, was out of the race, and handed the lead over to his brother Lamar Hughes. Smith was given his spot back for the restart, and he drove his Crouse Automotive Monte Carlo home to a sixth-place finish.

A caution flag for debris on lap ten bunched the field up at the halfway point in the race, and the third caution flag came out on lap 14 when Bobby Davenport of Crossville, TN spun the Davenport Racing Monte Carlo in turn one.

In the six-lap dash to the finish, Cash put the pressure on Lamar Hughes and stayed camped out on his back bumper.
