    Default RIP Gary Rossington

We lost the last founding member of Lynrd Skynrd!

As I've shared before, I grew up within a mile from Ronnie Van Zant and Billie Powell. In recent years, my family has grown close to Gary's side of the family. They're a bunch of good folks. He will be missed greatly!

I remember the day of the plane crash like it was yesterday. I’m from the same small Oklahoma town of the newest band members at the time, brother and sister, Steve and Cassie Gaines. I was setting in the Jr. high lunchroom eating early lunch when rumor spread, and my classmate, their cousin, was informed, then escorted out. The jukebox played only Lynyrd Skynyd tunes until a very somber lunch was over. Sad day!

The Street Survivors album of 1977 turned out to be a showcase for guitarist/vocalist Steve Gaines, who had joined the band just a year earlier and was making his studio debut with them. Publicly and privately, Ronnie Van Zant marveled at the multiple talents of Skynyrd's newest member, claiming that the band would "all be in his shadow one day".[26] Gaines' contributions included his co-lead vocal with Van Zant on the co-written "You Got That Right" and the rousing guitar boogie "I Know a Little", which he had written before he joined Skynyrd. So confident was Skynyrd's leader of Gaines' abilities that the album (and some concerts) featured Gaines delivering his self-penned bluesy "Ain't No Good Life" – the only song in the pre-crash Skynyrd catalog to feature a lead vocalist other than Ronnie Van Zant. The album also included the hit singles "What's Your Name" and "That Smell". The band was poised for their biggest tour yet, with shows always highlighted by the iconic rock anthem "Free Bird".[27]

I never did really listen to this band much.. Not saying they don't have talent, it's just I didn't like their music.

That last scene in happy Gilmore with them walking up to the house, the hot girl in the slinky dress and “Tuesdays gone” playing is one of my favorite endings to any movie.

Everyone knows the radio play of freebird and sweet home Alabama but skynard has a great portfolio of lesser played songs that are stellar…..one of my favorites.

    Default Street Survivors

Anyone remember the Street Survivor album cover with the flames, and the story?

The original cover sleeve for Street Survivors had featured a photograph of the band standing on a city street with all its buildings engulfed in flames, some near the center nearly obscuring Steve Gaines's face. After the plane crash, this cover became highly controversial. Out of respect for the deceased (and at the request of Teresa Gaines, Steve's widow), MCA Records withdrew the original cover and replaced it with a similar image of the band against a simple black background, which was on the back cover of the original sleeve. An urban legend has long claimed that only those band members touched by flame in the photograph were killed in the crash, but this is not true (flame appears to touch nearly all band members).[8] Thirty years later, for the deluxe CD version of Street Survivors, the original "flames" cover was restored.
