As far as the climbing belt Today they have the buck squeeze and if you start to fall it will grab the pole and not let you slide down the pole and get splinters, break a leg or foot. When your dad worked there they didn't have this safety feature

As far as the weather on my pole climbing test day in Chicago it was -27 with the windshield. When we were all done the instructor told us all if you made through today there is no reason you can't do this job. I've been super cold, super hot and soaked from head to toe in a rainstorm so, yes the weather can make the job a little harder from time to time.
Just the low votage as far as I know. Actually I don't know. I was just born but do remember seeing the cletes.

The worker started his suction pump to do a unit next door down and the noise woke the sleeper on up. The son was telling of one union job site where the walls of the crapper [or lounge as the lazy workers were using them for] had the walls filled right plumb full of dirty, vulgar, and tasteless pornography along all kinds of untruthful propaganda against the honorable Mr. Trump. The son asked his Dad; How in the heck do they get that many breaks in to have time to write all that filth ?

The original story that kicks off the thread is funny to me. My retirement gig right now is dump truck driver and heavy equipment operator for my neighbor's trucking and excavating business. Last year we got on a haul job for aggregates supplier to a major paper mill expansion in our area. When you would drive onto the job site you could divide the workers into three groups.

    1) Actual work getting done, machine operators, safety spotters, etc..
    2) Those walking to the porta potties.
    3) Those walking from the porta potties.

I'm not kidding. My boss and I would joke about it all the time.
Political correctness,...is the inability to speak the truth about the obvious.

there were times when unions had an important place in helping the working man , now there hurting them , I,m not saying a union will never be relevant in our country again , BUT they should not be involved in any type public funded job , like teachers , you know what your getting when you take the job , and my daughter is a teacher ......

Had to laugh at The Blondie cartoon in todays newspaper; Dagwood and 2 more workers were gazing out their office window. They were envious of a union crew outside because they were able to be out there in such nice weather and getting paid to goof off in it !
