PERKINSTON, MS – Billy Riels Racing has had a successful month of May that finds drivers Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS and K.I. Davis of Poplarville, MS one-two respectively in the Crate Racin’ USA Weekly Racing Series National Late Model point standings after nine weeks of the 27-week season.

Lee is the defending and three-time CRUSA WRS National Late Model Champion. So far this season “The General” has two wins, eight top five and eight top ten finishes in nine races for 384 points. Davis was the 2023 CRUSA WRS National Late Model Championship Runner-Up. In ten races, Davis has six top five finishes and eight top ten finishes for 365 points earned.

For the month of May, it started out with a rainout on May 5 at Hattiesburg Speedway in Hattiesburg, MS for the Billy Riels Racing Team. Lee and Davis competed in the CRUSA National Late Model Tour on May 6 at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS, and both finished outside the top ten, but each earned 41 Weekly Racing Series points.

On May 12, Hattiesburg Speedway rained out for the second straight week, so that left the Billy Riels Racing Team looking to earn points at Outlaw Speedway in Perkinston, MS on May 13. Lee finished third, and Davis took the seventh spot after a broken front suspension part. The finishes were good enough to keep Lee and Davis one-two in the CRUSA WRS Late Model standings.

Week 8 of the season took the Billy Riels Racing Team to Baton Rouge Raceway in Baton Rouge, LA on May 19. Lee came home with a second-place finish followed by Davis in the third spot. The team took May 20 off. The team returned to action at Hattiesburg Speedway on May 26, as the CRUSA WRS Late Model season reached the 1/3-mark.

Lee and Davis found their home track to their liking as Lee posted his second win of the 2023 season, and Davis finished third. Since Lee had already earned the maximum points on Friday night, he took May 27 off, but Davis tried to improve on his weekly point total on Saturday night by traveling to Jackson Motor Speedway in Jackson, MS.

Davis finished third at Jackson Motor Speedway, so his weekly point total remained the same for Week 9. Lee has a 19-point lead over Davis in the CRUSA WRS National Late Model standings. Chase Cooper of Perkinston, MS is third in the standings with 340 points, 44 points behind Lee and 25 points behind Davis.

For Week 10 of the CRUSA WRS Late Model season, there are no Friday night events close by for the Billy Riels Racing Team, so they will likely have a choice of running at Jackson Motor Speedway or Outlaw Speedway on Saturday. Stay tuned to the Billy Riels Racing Facebook Page for updates as the weekend draws closer.

Drivers competing for the 2023 Crate Racin’ USA Weekly Racing Series National Late Model Championship will use their best 14 finishes as their 2023 point total over a 27-week season that runs through October 1.

Car Owner Billy Riels has four CRUSA WRS National Championships. Lee has three National titles in 2019, 2021, and 2022. Noah Daspit of Kiln, MS won Riels’ first championship in 2013.
