ROCHESTER, Minn. (01/16/24) – Dustin Sorensen recently opened the 2024 season during the six-race 18th annual Rio Grande Waste Services Wild West Shootout at FK Rod Ends Vado (N.M.) Speedway Park.

Aboard his Heavy Hitch / Altenburg Construction No. 19 J&S JCB / 63 Club / Rochester Chevrolet / Longhorn Chassis / Pro Power Racing Engine Super Late Model Sorensen recorded four Top-10 finishes, including a fourth-place performance on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

“We learned so much about the new car during the Wild West Shootout, and it allowed us to work out some new car bugs as well as knock the rust off our team. We’re looking forward to rolling into Volusia (Speedway Park) this weekend to kick off the World of Outlaws season,” Sorensen said. “Thank you to everyone who supports this team and is allowing me to chase my dream of competing on a national Dirt Late Model tour.”

Dustin Sorensen kicked off the 2024 campaign by trekking southwest to FK Rod Ends Vado (N.M.) Speedway Park for the 18th annual Rio Grande Waste Services Wild West Shootout presented by O'Reilly Auto Parts.

The six-race miniseries opened on Saturday, Jan. 6 with 44 entries on hand for the $11,000-to-win event. Racing to a fourth-place finish in his heat race, Sorensen earned the 16th-starting spot for the night's 40-lap feature. He enjoyed a great run in the first feature of the year, passing nine drivers to finish seventh.

Action continued on Sunday evening, but with challenging weather conditions, Dustin's luck wouldn't be the best. He went out last in qualifying on a track that had slowed down significantly due to high winds. A poor qualifying effort put him behind the eight ball the rest of the night, and he was unable to recover to earn a starting spot in the night's feature as his outing came to an early end.

When action resumed on Wednesday, Dustin hit the ground running by setting fast time in his qualifying group before winning his heat race. Earning a spot in the redraw, Sorensen received the fourth-starting spot for the $11,000-to-win main event.

Dustin ran in the Top 5 throughout the main event before crossing the finish line in the fourth spot behind Bobby Pierce, Garrett Alberson, and Shannon Babb.

Sorensen raced into the second weekend of action at the Rio Grande Waste Services Wild West Shootout on Friday, Jan. 12.

Dustin went up against a talented field of 43 Super Late Models. After qualifying fourth fastest in his group, he finished fourth in his heat race, which transferred Sorensen to the 15th-starting spot for the main event.

Advancing four spots, he crossed the finish line in 11th.

Action continued on Saturday evening, where Dustin qualified eighth fastest in his group before advancing two spots to finish second in his heat race. Racing in the Top 10 throughout the 40-lap finale, he crossed the finish line in the ninth position.

The miniseries drew to a close on Sunday evening with the $26,000-to-win Rio Grande Waste Services 50 presented by Shaw Trucking 50. Sorensen streaked to the fastest time in his qualifying group and paired with a third-place finish in his heat race, lined up ninth on the grid for the 50-lap finale.

Dustin raced in the Top 10 throughout the finale and survived a hole in the fuel line late in the race to notch a 10th-place finish.

With his consistency throughout the six-race series he earned the eighth position in the final series standings.
